The Economy of Communion as a Social Innovation to Humanise Business

2018

The purpose of this chapter is to better understand the growth of EoC, analysing this movement from the perspective of social innovation and examining the innovative activities of EoC businesses. We have found that EoC is based on solid values and principles, and has a clear objective, which is to fight for a better world, eliminating poverty. Companies inspired by human-oriented management practices are those which move to achieve this objective. We argue in this chapter that EoC is a radical social innovation, as it is social in both its ends and its means, meeting social needs and creating new social relationships and collaborations. This paper analyses three Spanish EoC companies, using…

Make love, not war: a process-based approach to social innovation

2017

Traditional approaches to social innovation focus on products, services, and ideas that enable social problems to be solved. They also often view social innovation as resulting from a cross-fertilization between multiple stakeholders. We advocate for a process-based approach to social innovation internal to organizations, anchored in the concept of ethical love. While love, as a concept, has only received attention recently in academic management research, contrary to its common usage in psychology, we propose a philosophical and anthropological perspective on the call for love in organizations and distinguish with the help of the philosopher Levinas between political love and ethical love.…

The Emergence of Universities in the Middle Ages

2019

The chapter begins with an analysis of the historical context in which European universities were born. The time of the emergence of universities (the twelfth and thirteenth centuries) coincided with a major medieval transition period in Europe, characterised by changes both in social power structures and in the ecclesiastical thinking of the Catholic Church. The analysis is followed by a description of the emergence of the first universities – Bologna and Paris – which became the models for other universities. The idea of restoring the true and original university (reformatio) was followed at the new universities founded throughout Europe, even though each university developed its own vers…

Design and connected Heritages. From the Mediterranean to Infosphere

2022

From smart to lean : how to design for better cities, happier citizens and save the world

2018

Adaptive cities, communities and technology

2017

The paper selects content and methodologies of a research experience applied to Human Smart City in order to demonstra…

Augmented City : a Paradigm Shift

2017

Augmented City is a spatial/cultural/social/economic platform for enhancing our contemporary life, individual and collective, informal and institutional. If we live and act in a reality permanently improved by hard and soft devices, our cities must be more responsive to our behavioral changes. In incoming Neo-Anthropocene cities are " vibrant organisms of space and community, of data and information, of sensors and actuators, of actions and reactions, of urban/rural metabolism generated by people and environment both.

The social regeneration of brownfields as an activator of peri-urban development. The Añana salt valley in Spain as good model of brownfield regenera…

2016

Productive and extractive districts in a state of neglect are in dire need of regeneration, especially brownfields that are in rur-urban sites and could disfigure the landscape. These elements should be considered as resources to define a new territorial value. The present paper shows an empirical example of brownfield re-cycle that produce social innovation in rur-urban sites, this case study is the Añana salt valley and it is situated in Spain. Brownfields, in fact, are catalysts of social, economic, cultural, and ecological revitalization. This aspect assigns to these elements a value of peri-urban resource for a sustainable and participatory multi-scale enhancement. The paper focus the …
