"Pour moi, le goût du soja n'est pas une barrière à la consommation. Et pour vous ?" : Effet de la culture sur les croyances, attitudes et préférence…

2010

Understanding consumers' beliefs, attitudes and sensory preference is the key to a successful development and introduction of a new food. This thesis carried out a series of cross-cultural studies, France vs. Vietnam, on consumers' representation of soy foods and on sensory perception and preference of soy yogurts, a soy derived product recently developed for French market which does not exist on the Vietnamese market. Despite a favourable image of soy in terms of nutrition and health benefices, French participants reported that the barrier to its consumption was the taste of soy. This finding was confirmed by a consumer test in which French participants gave very low hedonic evaluations to…

Another Life

2013

Many writers started their professional lives in very diverse fields before embracing writing, or on the contrary have turned away from writing. The present volume seeks to explore the complex relationship between that ‘other life’ and writing. The aim is to determine whether a writer’s ‘other life’ appears in, influences or even shapes his/her work, and to what extent. What is the part of gestation and that of rupture? A diversity of writers is examined: Patrick Chamoiseau, J. M. Coetzee, Jan J. Dominique, Janet Frame, Amitav Ghosh, L. K. Johnson, Wilson Harris, Dany Laferrière, Yannick Lahens, NourbeSe Philip, Emmelie Prophète, Arundhati Roy, Edward Said, but also Bartolomé de las Casas a…

Applied Social Anthropology in the Researcher’s Own Society

2014

Professor Arne Martin Klausen (1927-) is the only social anthropologist in Norway who has tried to analyse the culture of the country as a whole. In doing this, he has explored several central themes of the country’s culture; like egalitarianism, the class journey, the strong tradition for development aid to poor countries, connected to a so-called humanitarian super-power which in its turn was an extension of Christian mission, the very wide-spread newspaper reading; however self-centered to national and local issues and finally, the collision between an elitist Olympic culture with Norwegian egalitarianism. Klausen also tried to tie some threads together in editing a collection of essays …

Co-construct territorial cultures

2015

International audience; Carrying out investigations in the framework of the scientific network INTI (International Network of Territorial Intelligence, http://inti.hypotheses.org/), the main idea is here to value the contribution of multiple approaches in territorial information and communication science that can be experienced there. Inspired by the triad of Pestalozzi, these experiences have applied and adapted the territorial engineering approach "Catalyse" in their territories. From the cooperative structuring of information to concrete initiatives of local change, communication processes make possible iterations between understanding and action, in which the analysis of the effects of s…

Testosterone and cortisol release among Spanish soccer fans watching the 2010 World Cup Final

2012

This field study investigated the release of testosterone and cortisol of a vicarious winning experience in Spanish fans watching the finals between Spain and the Netherlands in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Soccer. Spanish fans (n = 50) watched the match with friends or family in a public place or at home and also participated in a control condition. Consistent with hypotheses, results revealed that testosterone and cortisol levels were higher when watching the match than on a control day. However, neither testosterone nor cortisol levels increased after the victory of the Spanish team. Moreover, the increase in testosterone secretion was not related to participants' sex, age or soccer fandom, b…

A Folklorist in the Soviet Spotlight

2019

Abstract The article seeks to illuminate the ideologically motivated circumstances of Latvian folklore studies during the period of unconditional Soviet totalitarianism. With the strengthening of the Soviet occupation regime in Latvia in the late 1940s, many interwar folklorists became victims of ideologically motivated disdain and subsequent career limitation. ‘Bourgeois’ scholarship and the methods applied in folklore studies during the interwar period were denounced and recognised as harmful to the new Soviet order. The central part of the article presents a case study of one individual folklorist of the time, Anna Bērzkalne (1891–1956). Both increasing criticism of Bērzkalne’s folklore …
