Effects of distance and scale dependence in geographical models of cities and territories

2019

International audience; This third chapter questions the essential role of distance and scale dependence in models to analyzing the spatial configuration of human settlements and activities, as well as the processes that lead to their evolution, with reference to urban or regional study areas. The subject of study therefore concerns both the form of human settlements and the actions of people (individuals, groups) in their territory (or territories). A human settlement consists of the materialization in space-the physical inscription-of one or more human activities. It is characterized by a certain degree of sustainability. It can be a group of a few buildings or a larger group of thousands…

‘You really are a great big sister’ – parasocial relationships, credibility, and the moderating role of audience comments in influencer marketing

2020

This study examines the moderating role of audience comments in influencer marketing. A YouTube vlog entry by a social media influencer featuring the endorsement of a brand was studied, and an experimental design featuring two conditions related to audience comments was created. The results indicate that a parasocial relationship with the influencer builds the perceived credibility of the influencer, while comments by other audience members moderate the effect. Influencer credibility positively affects brand trust and purchase intention. The findings enhance the understanding of the role of an active audience in influencer marketing. peerReviewed

A stigmergic approach for social interaction design in collaboration engineering

2014

The increasing number of available collaborative tools and their extensive use in many organizational activities has constantly raised the complexity of collaboration engineering. It presumes the design of group decision processes, supported by a wide-range of groupware tools, in an ill-structured, dynamic, and open environment. As many of these processes are recurring by nature, the development of a shared repository to store the collective knowledge and experiences of group decision process designs became a core research topic of collaboration engineering in last few years. The paper presents a human-computer interaction engineering approach to design a software prototype that provides pe…

Opposing Forces of Social Attraction and Social Avoidance Drive Network Modularity

2020

SUMMARY: How interactions between individuals contribute to the emergence of complex societies is a major question in biology. Nonetheless, little remains known about how simple rules of social attraction (e.g. to information) and social avoidance (e.g. of disease) interact to shape sociality. We developed an individual-based model where individuals choose with whom to interact depending on the status of group mates (informed and/or infected). Statistical models indicate that the emergence of social structure depends on the cost/benefit trade-offs underlying the system. Critically, pressures that optimize social relationships – i.e. minimize risky connections while favouring those that maxi…

The Development of the Dealing with Challenging Interaction (DCI) Method to Evaluate Teachers’ Social Interaction Skills

2012

The Dealing with Challenging Interaction (DCI) method was developed to measure social interaction skills of teacher study groups. The participants were 70 teachers from three schools. The inter-rater agreement, Cohen’s kappa, varied between 0.57- 1.00. The discriminant validity was supported by a cluster analysis differentiating between the skilful and less skilful teachers. The results of the supplementary instrument were equivalent to the cluster analysis maintaining criterion oriented validity of the method developed. The DCI appeared to be a reliable and valid tool for measuring teachers’ social interaction skills. Peer reviewed

Developing social competence and other generic skills in teacher education : applying the model of integrative pedagogy

2016

The purpose of the study was to examine how social competence and other generic skills can be developed in teacher education using a pedagogical model called Integrative Pedagogy. This model is based on the idea of integrating the four basic components of expertise: Theoretical knowledge, practical knowledge, self-regulative knowledge, and sociocultural knowledge. The subjects of the study were 95 student-teachers. The data were collected with questionnaires. In addition to social skills, the student-teachers reported learning of domain-specific skills, generic academic skills, skills for acting creatively in different situations and development of independence. We conclude that the model o…

The influence of intra-team conflict on work teams' affective climate: A longitudinal study

2008

We analysed whether relationship conflict mediates the link between task conflict and shared affect at the team level of analysis. Moreover, we tested the hypothesis that the relationship between these two types of intra-team conflict would be moderated by team members' interaction. The sample was composed of 156 bank branches. Data were gathered at two points in time. Two affect dimensions (tension and enthusiasm) were measured. The results obtained supported our hypotheses. Relationship conflict fully mediated the relationship between task conflict and team affect. Team members' interaction about team issues moderated the relationship between task conflict and relationship conflict, so th…

Abstract Video games are part of the technological revolution, and it is possible nowadays to play video games anytime and anywhere as a primary source of youth entertainment. The research question of this study refers to which are the patterns of video game usage by Spanish school adolescents. In particular, it analyzes the time and money spent on video games among Spanish teenage students of 11–19 years old (M = 13.98; SD ± 1.397), as well as the game platform and the type of video games used, according to type of day and, especially, gender of the player. A survey was applied to a representative sample of adolescent students (n = 1502) from Valencian Region (Spain). The results showed an…

Exploring the impact of augmented reality in children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder: a systematic review

2020

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by persistent difficulties in communication and social interaction along with a restriction in interests and the presence of repetitive behaviors. The development and use of augmented reality technology for autism has increased in recent years. However, little is known about the impact of these virtual reality technologies on clinical health symptoms. The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the impact of augmented reality through social, cognitive, and behavioral domains in children and adolescents with autism. This study is the first contribution that has carried out an evidence-based systematic r…
