In the midst of the great recession, the Spanish Socialists Worker's Party (PSOE) lost the Government and experienced a process of instability while trying to reconnect with its electorate. The party's strategic response was embracing highly inclusive deliberations on both key institutional and policy issues that eventually sparked tensions and division. These internal debates led to the introduction and implementation of other democratic innovations, such as direct votes and consultations that substantially transformed key features of the PSOE's organizational model. Bioethics and power: Informed consent procedures in post-socialist Latvia

This paper explores two lines of development in the donor consent procedures in post-Soviet Latvia. The paper is based on secondary analysis of interview, focus group discussion data, and media and legal text material collected throughout three previously conducted research projects on organ transplantation, population genome project and xenotransplantation focusing on the historical development of the issues of donor consent across these three fields of medical technologies. The paper argues that the quality of consent depends not as much on political and legal change per se as on the strengthening of the position of both medical specialists and donors, facilitating bonds between the two.
From Nazi holocaust to nuclear holocaust: a lesson to learn?

In a 1986 address to the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, a German physician describes his profession's embrace of National Socialism. The nationalistic sentiments of German scientists led them to identify with the goals of the Third Reich and to participate in its programs. He gives examples of physician involvement in the Nazi Party, discrimination against "non-Aryan" doctors, "eugenic" mass murder, and lethal experiments with human subjects. This article analyses the national discourse of Spanish socialism during the Second Republic and seeks to emphasise the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party’s identification with a Spanish national identity. Furthermore, by considering the case of the Valencian Region (País Valenciano), it points to ways in which that identity was expressed, showing the role of the local and regional spheres in the socialist interpretation of national identity. In this article, the author reflects on the associative models chosen by Spanish working and popular classes since the middle of nineteenth century in order to defend their interests, especially in the case of the difussion of culture and education. It is remarkable the continuity and success of some inherited prototypes, as it happened with the «ateneos» until the years of the Spanish civil war. At the same time, workers' organizations tried to satisfy an extensive range of demands by developing multifunctional centres. Examples of these were the «Casas del Pueblo» (People's Houses) erected by the socialist movement.

El presente texto reflexiona sobre algunas experiencias asociativas de las mujeres de distintas organizaciones femeninas de izquierda durante la Segunda República española (1931-1936). A través de ellas, las mujeres aumentaron su presencia pública en este período, sus vinculaciones y su compromiso, a través de múltiples acciones y propuestas. Pero a la vez, estas experiencias incrementaron el contacto y la interacción entre ellas, posibilitando su reconocimiento mutuo, su «apoyo mutuo», y con él, el desarrollo de su conciencia y de su identidad como mujeres, como socialistas y como trabajadoras.
