Co-digestion of grass silage and cow manure in a CSTR by re-circulation of alkali treated solids of the digestate.

2008

Three laboratory, continuously stirred tank reactors (CSTRs) co-digesting grass silage and cow manure (forming 30% and 70% of substrate volatile solids (VS), respectively) were operated to evaluate the effects of re-circulating an alkali-treated and untreated solid fraction of the digestate back to the reactors. The CSTRs were operated at an organic loading rate (OLR) of 2 kg VS m(-3) day(-1) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 days with a semi-continuous mode of feeding. The feasibility of co-digestion with substrate VS containing 30% VS of crop was reinforced, resulting in average specific methane yield of about 180-185 1 CH4 kg(-1) VS. Re-circulation of the solid fraction of digesta…

Structure of nanoporous carbon materials for supercapacitors

2012

Activated carbons with highly developed porous structure and nanosized pores (8 - 11 A) were prepared from alder wood using thermochemical activation method with sodium hydroxide. Properties of the obtained activated carbons were examined by benzene and nitrogen sorption, X-Ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Tests of activated carbons as electrodes in supercapacitors were performed as well. It was found that specific surface area of above mentioned activated carbons was 1800 m 2 /g (Dubinin - Radushkevich). Raman spectroscopy demonstrated the presence of ordered and disordered structures of graphite origin. The performance of activated carbons as electrodes in supercapacitors have show…

ChemInform Abstract: Facile Synthesis and Characterization of Monocrystalline Cubic ZrO2Nanoparticles.

2008

Abstract Crystalline ZrO2 nanoparticles were prepared from zirconium isopropoxide by slow hydrolysis and subsequent hydrothermal treatment of solutions containing various amounts of sodium hydroxide at 180 °C. Whereas moderately basic solutions lead to the formation of nanoparticles of monoclinic ZrO2 with plate-like morphology, and nanoparticles of the cubic ZrO2 high-temperature polymorph with diameters of approx. 5 nm were obtained from strongly basic solutions. The morphology, structure and properties of as-synthesized nanoparticles were characterized using HRTEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, UV–vis, PL spectroscopy and BET measurements. The formation of both, the monoclinic and the cubic p…

Observations on the use of a sulfuric acid medium for As(V) to As(III) reduction in lodimetric titrations: Application to the determination of total …

1991

Abstract The use of a sulfuric rather than a hydrochloric acid medium for the reduction of As(V) to As(III) by iodide is proposed. Optimum conditions of acid concentration, amount of sodium hydroxide, and time and temperature are established to achieve quantitative reduction. The optimized reduction procedure was applied to the iodimetric determination of total arsenic and compared to a procedure that employs a hydrochloric acid medium. A systematic error of 0.04% was found for the method with a sulfuric acid medium opposed to 0.05% for the method with a hydrochloric acid medium in the reduction step. The proposed modified iodimetric method has been successfully used with some organic sampl…

Untersuchungen zum oxidativen Abbau nativer Cellulose, 2. Einfluß der Alkalibehandlung auf die Viskositäts-Molekulargewichts-Beziehungen

1974

For kinetic studies of cellulose degradation by molecular oxygen it is necessary to establish new [η]-M-relation…

The initial stages of the heterogeneous degradation of alkali cellulose by oxygen in relation to the morphology of native cotton cellulose

2007

Treatment of cotton cellulose with sodium hydroxide solutions of varying concentration over extended periods in the absence of oxygen markedly decreases the intrinsic viscosity of both the cellulose in cuoxam and its cellulose trinitrate derivative (CTN) in acetone. Light-scattering measurements show that the molecular weight does not change while the radius of gyration decreases and the second virial coefficient increases. The narrow molecular weight distribution of the native cotton is still maintained. Mild oxidation first causes the intrinsic viscosity to increase. At more prolonged oxidation times the viscosity decreases. These results are interpreted by an intramolecular cross-linking…

1973

Comparison of Structure and Properties of Differently Treated Illite Clay and Products

2014

The investigation is focused on modification of the structure 2:1 sheet silicates - illite clay by subjecting them to chemical and microbiological impact. It is shown that alkaline activation of illite clay by sodium hydroxide leads to the slight structural changes mainly characterized by water link changes. The effect of bacteria Ps. fluorescens AM PS11on structure changes of illite is small and is influenced on rheology of treated clay.It is shown that the influence of chemical treatment on porosity, bulk density and increase of compressive strength of sintered ceramic samples is notable.
