The purpose of the present thesis is to perform a research on the textual tradition and the critical edition of Aelius Aristides’ speech Εἰς Ῥώμην (To Rome) (2nd century CE). Delivered in Rome in 144 CE, this speech is a praise of the Roman Empire. The first critical edition of the speech was published by B. Keil in 1898; in the 20th century, two philologists prepared editions with critical text, based on the apparatus of Keil. The thesis consists of a general introduction and two parts, followed by the bibliography, and four appendices. This paper deals with the concept of eikos, traditionally translated as “probability” or “likelihood". The aim is to show the complexity and the theoretical worth of this notion and, more specifically, the crucial role it plays in the Platonic attack against Sophists. The starting point is a famous passage of Phaedrus (272d-273a) where Socrates says that the speaker who follows eikos must "say goodbye to the truth”. However, this negative attitude towards eikos is not the only one possible. Indeed, in previous literature, and especially in historiography and rhetoric, eikos does not oppose itself to truth. Attraverso una carrellata selettiva di testi filosofici e letterari, nonché attraverso un complessivo riesame delle fonti primarie e secondarie, l'articolo propone una ridiscussione, a scopo eminentemente divulgativo, dell'ideale greco della 'paideia'.
