Initial surgery for localized rhabdomyosarcoma: a report from the italian Soft Tissue Sarcoma Cooperative Group Studies.

2005

Objective. Analysis of the initial surgical approach in patients with localized rhabdomyosarcoma, enrolled in Italian Studies (1979-2003). Methods. Surgical records of 587 patients were evaluated. As primary surgery, the excision was recommended if microscopically complete, otherwise biopsy was preferable. Results. The initial biopsy, performed in almost 50% of patients in RMS-79 protocol, has been adopted more often in the protocol RMS-88 and 96. However, the “complete resection” rate has remained quite stable through the years, as well as the percentage of microscopic residue. The macroscopic residue disease has been more important in RMS-88 study than in RMS-96. Most GUnBP tumors and abo…

Tailoring Electrospinning Fabrication for Scaffolds for Heart Valve Tissue Engineering

2010

Previous work in controlling mechanical properties of electrospun scaffolds has largely been limited to altering the orientation of the fibrous network by either large rotational velocity or by altering the electric field during fabrication. Our lab has previously developed a technique to analyze the complete microstructural topology of electrospun scaffolds and extract key descriptors. In this project, we translated the target mandrel at varying speeds along its rotational axis in order to modify the microarchitecture without altering the fiber orientation angle. Using the algorithm mentioned above, we determined that increasing the translation speed resulted in a decrease in fiber interse…

A Method to Extract the Complete Fiber Network Topology of Planar Fibrous Tissues and Scaffolds

2010

Improving fabrication protocols and design strategies, investigating on how fibrous ECM and synthetic architectures affect cell morphology, metabolism and phenotypic expression, predicting mechanical behaviors, have increasingly become crucial goals in the understanding of native tissues and in the development of engineered tissue. In the present study, an image-based analysis approach that provides an automatic tool to fully characterize engineered tissue fiber network topology was developed. The following micro architectural features were detected: fiber angle distribution, fiber connectivity, fiber overlap spatial density, and fiber diameter. In order to demonstrate the potential of this…

Gingival and submandibular lymph node metastasis of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma

2010

Introduction: Metastatic tumors of oral and maxillofacial region compromise 1% of all malignant oral neoplasms. Most commonly affect the jaw bone and less commonly intraoral soft tissues. They originate mainly from primary tumors of lung, breast, colon-rectum, prostate and kidney. Case report: a 77 years old man with history of sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma and liver metastasis. Two years later of being free of disease, he presented with submandi- bular lymphadenopathy and a gingival mass in right upper jaw. Fine needle aspiration of the node and biopsy of the gingival mass were performed. The cytological smears showed cohesive cell groups on a necrotic background. Biopsy examination showed …

20 years of alveolar distraction : a systematic review of the literature

2018

Background The Vertical Alveolar Distraction Osteogenesis (VADO) technique is an excellent solution for bone and soft tissue neoformation in areas in which there has been significant bone atrophy that hinders normal rehabilitation using dental implants. The goal of this systematic review is to analyze the most relevant articles published on VADO in the literature over the past 20 years. Material and Methods The review was performed by using the keywords: “alveolar ridge”, “distraction ostegenesis” and “dental implant”. This search produced a total result of 240 articles. The clinical studies and cases reported in humans amounted to 113 articles, 18 articles referred to studies developed on …

Culturomic and quantitative real‐time ‐ polymerase chain reaction analyses for early contamination of abutments with different surfaces: A randomized…

2021

Background Rough and/or plasma-activated abutments seem to be able to increase soft tissue adhesion and stability; however, limited evidence is available about bacterial contamination differences. Purpose The aim was to investigate the oral microbiota on four dental abutments with different surfaces by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and culturomic approach. Methods Forty patients needing a single implant rehabilitation were involved in the study. Forty healing abutments, especially designed for the study, were divided into four groups according to the surface topography (1. machined [MAC], 2. machined plasma of argon treated [plasmaMAC], 3. ultrathin threaded mic…

Analysis of p53 and mdm2 proteins in malignant fibrous histiocytoma in absence of gene alteration: prognostic significance.

2000

TP53 and MDM2 genes and their protein expression were evaluated in frozen and paraffin-embedded tissue from 27 patients with malignant fibrous histiocytoma to elucidate the relationship between them, their implication in tumor progression mechanisms and their possible diagnostic-prognostic value in malignant fibrous histiocytoma. Single-strand conformation polymorphism analysis and direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction-amplified DNA were used to establish two TP53 mutations (7.4%): a point mutation and a 63-bp duplication. Amplification of the MDM2 gene was observed in two tumors (7.4%) by means of Southern-blot analysis, one of them also carrying the TP53 point mutation. Immunohis…

The impact of intercellular communication for the generation of complex multicellular prevascularized tissue equivalents

2019

In reconstructive surgery the use of prevascularized soft tissue equivalents is a promising approach for wound coverage of defects after tumor resection or trauma. However, in previous studies to generate soft tissue equivalents on collagen membranes, microcapillaries were restricted to superficial areas. In this study, to understand which factors were involved in the formation of these microcapillaries, the levels of the angiogenic factors vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), and basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) in the supernatants of the tissue equivalents were examined at various time points and conditions. Additionally, the influence of these factors on …
