Real-Time Monocular Pose Estimation of 3D Objects Using Temporally Consistent Local Color Histograms

2017

We present a novel approach to 6DOF pose estimation and segmentation of rigid 3D objects using a single monocular RGB camera based on temporally consistent, local color histograms. We show that this approach outperforms previous methods in cases of cluttered backgrounds, heterogenous objects, and occlusions. The proposed histograms can be used as statistical object descriptors within a template matching strategy for pose recovery after temporary tracking loss e.g. caused by massive occlusion or if the object leaves the camera’s field of view. The descriptors can be trained online within a couple of seconds moving a handheld object in front of a camera. During the training stage, our approac…

Real-Time Monocular Segmentation and Pose Tracking of Multiple Objects

2016

We present a real-time system capable of segmenting multiple 3D objects and tracking their pose using a single RGB camera, based on prior shape knowledge. The proposed method uses twist-coordinates for pose parametrization and a pixel-wise second-order optimization approach which lead to major improvements in terms of tracking robustness, especially in cases of fast motion and scale changes, compared to previous region-based approaches. Our implementation runs at about 50–100 Hz on a commodity laptop when tracking a single object without relying on GPGPU computations. We compare our method to the current state of the art in various experiments involving challenging motion sequences and diff…

Matrices of the frequency and similarity of Arabic letters and allographs

2020

Published online: 19 February 2020 Indicators of letter frequency and similarity have long been available for Indo-European languages. They have not only been pivotal in controlling the design of experimental psycholinguistic studies seeking to determine the factors that underlie reading ability and literacy acquisition, but have also been useful for studies examining the more general aspects of human cognition. Despite their importance, however, such indicators are still not available for Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), a language that, by virtue of its orthographic system, presents an invaluable environment for the experimental investigation of visual word processing. This paper presents fo…

Abstract Patient handover is an important part for information transfer between medical professionals in a clinical setting. Yet, in current medical education, these conversations are only trained sparsely, since they are costly to perform as they take place in offsite courses and are led by experts over several days. Virtual reality (VR)-based training courses could increase the availability of training, by eliminating travel costs and reducing the time-commitment of the teaching experts. This work presents a VR prototype of a multi-user training and examination application for patient handover. To ensure a similar interaction quality to its current real world counterpart, this work used o…

KIND-DAMA: A modular middleware for Kinect-like device data management

2017

Summary In the last decades, we have witnessed a growing interest toward touchless gestural user interfaces. Among other reasons, this is due to the large availability of different low-cost gesture acquisition hardware (the so-called “Kinect-like devices”). As a consequence, there is a growing need for solutions that allow to easily integrate such devices within actual systems. In this paper, we present KIND-DAMA, an open and modular middleware that helps in the development of interactive applications based on gestural input. We first review the existing middlewares for gestural data management. Then, we describe the proposed architecture and compare its features against the existing simila…

Combining traditional and indirect augmented reality for indoor crowded environments. A case study on the Casa Batlló museum

2017

Abstract Mobile audio-guides are currently being used in museums to enhance the visitors’ experience. Over the past few years, some Augmented Reality (AR) solutions have been explored in this context, making it possible to provide augmented visual and sonic stimuli through the use of smartphones. However, the special conditions of museums (e.g. artificial markers cannot be used, small, crowded rooms, etc.) and the limited computational capacity of smartphones mean that there are important restrictions in the use of this technology. In this paper we introduce a novel mobile augmented guide for the Casa Batllo museum (Barcelona, Spain) which is based on a combination of traditional and indire…

Multimedia and Internet Systems : Theory and Practice

2013

Aleksander Zgrzywa, Kazimierz Choro, and Andrzej Siemiski (Eds.) Multimedia and Internet Systems: Theory and Practice During the last 20 years we have witnessed a rapid development of Multimedia and Network Information Systems. What is even more important, the pace of change does not show any sign of slowing. When we look back we see how many research projects that have originated at various universities or in research facilities are now part of our everyday life. This monograph offers the reader a very broad review of the most recent scientific investigations in that area. The book is a collection of carefully selected and the most representative investigations, solutions, and applications…

LABCENTER. A remote laboratory system platform

2011

Abstract A web system server especially suited for remote laboratories has been developed. Typical e-learning systems do not offer the possibility to perform a remote laboratory where real experiments can be done online, accessing real hardware located at the University facilities. Allowing students to connect to hardware systems remotely provides them with additional knowledge about real devices; very often, real laboratory devices are time or space restricted. The proposed LABCENTER platform is a general frame designed for remote laboratories connection. The platform is designed to allow an authorized student to connect to hardware systems. As direct hardware systems allow only a single u…
