Modelling and Testing of Real Systems
2016
Modelling and Programming are often used together in system development. However, typically there is a large conceptual gap between modelling and programming. This leads to problems in unified handling and the transition between the two. This way, extra work is required when combining modelling and programming. This paper develops a common understanding that can unify modelling and programming in system development.
Infrastructure and system programming for digital ecosystems used in natural disaster management
2009
Researchers in most fields of activity must concentrate their efforts to eradicate or at least to mitigate the negative effects of “global warming”, which affect the entire planet. Within this context, we strongly believe that IT&C specialists should also approach the issue. Therefore, this paper presents the results and solutions obtained during the development of a research contract dealing on the one hand with real-time data collection and data centralization in a decision making system, and on the other with the dissemination of information among the people exposed to the effects of natural disasters such as: floods, storms, tsunamis, or other natural disasters which may destroy propert…
Aircraft type-specific errors in AMDAR weather reports from commercial aircraft
2008
AMDAR (Aircraft Meteorological DAta Relay) automated weather reports from commercial aircraft provide an increasing amount of input data for numerical weather prediction models. Previous studies have investigated the quality of AMDAR data. Few of these studies, however, have revealed indications of systematic errors dependent upon the aircraft type. Since different airlines use different algorithms to generate AMDAR reports, it has remained unclear whether a dependency on the aircraft type is caused by physical properties of the aircraft or by different data processing algorithms. In the present study, a special AMDAR dataset was used to investigate the physical type-dependent errors of AMD…
Dark Design Patterns : An End-User Perspective
2020
The number of websites and mobile applications available is growing continually, as are the persuasive approaches to influence human behavior and decision making. Although designing for persuasion offers several potential benefits, recent developments expose various deceptive designs, that is, dark patterns, that utilize psychological factors to nudge people toward, from someone else’s perspective, desired directions. This paper contributes to an increased awareness of the phenomenon of dark patterns through our exploring how users perceive and experience these patterns. Hence, we chose a qualitative research approach, with focus groups and interviews, for our exploration. Our analysis show…
A practical methodology to perform global sensitivity analysis for 2D hydrodynamic computationally intensive simulations
2021
Sensitivity analysis is a commonly used technique in hydrological modeling for different purposes, including identifying the influential parameters and ranking them. This paper proposes a simplified sensitivity analysis approach by applying the Taguchi design and the ANOVA technique to 2D hydrodynamic flood simulations, which are computationally intensive. This approach offers an effective and practical way to rank the influencing parameters, quantify the contribution of each parameter to the variability of the outputs, and investigate the possible interaction between the input parameters. A number of 2D flood simulations have been carried out using the proposed combinations by Taguchi (L27…
An analytical model of a new packet marking algorithm for TCP flows
2005
In Differentiated Services networks, packets may receive a different treatment according to their Differentiateo Services Code Point (DSCP) label. As a consequence, packet marking schemes can also be devised to differentiate packets belonging to a same TCP flow, with the goal of improving the performance experienced. This paper presents an analytical model for an adaptive packet marking scheme proposed in our previous work. The model combines three specific sub-models aimed at describing (i) the TCP sources aggregate, (ii) the marker, and (iii) the network status. Preliminary simulation results show quite accurate predictions for throughput and average queue occupancy. Besides, the research…
MODOMICS: a database of RNA modification pathways—2013 update
2012
MODOMICS is a database of RNA modifications that provides comprehensive information concerning the chemical structures of modified ribonucleosides, their biosynthetic pathways, RNA-modifying enzymes and location of modified residues in RNA sequences. In the current database version, accessible at http://modomics.genesilico.pl, we included new features: a census of human and yeast snoRNAs involved in RNA-guided RNA modification, a new section covering the 5′-end capping process, and a catalogue of ‘building blocks’ for chemical synthesis of a large variety of modified nucleosides. The MODOMICS collections of RNA modifications, RNA-modifying enzymes and modified RNAs have been also updated. A…
Ventricular Fibrillation and Tachycardia detection from surface ECG using time-frequency representation images as input dataset for machine learning
2017
Parameter-less ventricular fibrillation detection with time-frequency representation.Time-frequency representations are treated as images for a classifier.A comparison for four classifiers demonstrates the validity of the proposed method. The proposed technique could be applied to any signal and research field. This is a novel approach to signal analysis. Background and objectiveTo safely select the proper therapy for Ventricullar Fibrillation (VF) is essential to distinct it correctly from Ventricular Tachycardia (VT) and other rhythms. Provided that the required therapy would not be the same, an erroneous detection might lead to serious injuries to the patient or even cause Ventricular Fibr…
A probabilistic condensed representation of data for stream mining
2014
Data mining and machine learning algorithms usually operate directly on the data. However, if the data is not available at once or consists of billions of instances, these algorithms easily become infeasible with respect to memory and run-time concerns. As a solution to this problem, we propose a framework, called MiDEO (Mining Density Estimates inferred Online), in which algorithms are designed to operate on a condensed representation of the data. In particular, we propose to use density estimates, which are able to represent billions of instances in a compact form and can be updated when new instances arrive. As an example for an algorithm that operates on density estimates, we consider t…
