Optimal configuration for size-based burst assembly algorithms at the edge node for video traffic transmissions over OBS networks

2008

Optical burst switching (OBS) has been proposed to be a technology for implementing the next generation optical Internet. In this architecture, burst assembly algorithms have an important influence in the pattern traffic that characteristic this sort of optical networks. On the other hand, traffic coming from new applications (such as video on demand, Voice over IP, online gaming or Grid computing) that have real time and bandwidth constraints, has been experimented a rapid increment. Consequently, we consider important to evaluate the performance of traffic from real time applications over OBS networks. In this paper, we evaluate the effects of implementing a size-based burst assembly sche…

Modelling the Water Retention Domain of a Compacted Scaly Clay

2012

A body of experimental data on the water retention behaviour of compacted samples of an Italian scaly clay is analysed. The mechanical and the hydraulic behaviour of compacted samples of this clay are governed by multi-scale arrangement of scales and aggregates, which characterises the compacted clay fabric. At least two different pore networks, namely intra-aggregate and inter-aggregate, may be identified, which interact one with the other along coupled hydro-mechanical paths. The retention behaviour is interpreted in the framework of a comprehensive multi-scale modelling approach recently proposed for compacted clays of low and medium activity, which proves to be able to account for the i…

UVolc: A software platform for measuring volcanic SO2 fluxes

2012

We present here a novel stand-alone software platform, UVolc, for remotely sensed measurement of volcanic SO"2 emission rates. Such data are important diagnostics of activity conditions, with utility in forecasting measures. This code is made user friendly to enable volcanologists, who are not experts in the underlying physics of spectroscopy, to perform their own measurements. The program provides considerable reduction in errors and far greater operating flexibility than existing analogous code, which, unlike UVolc, can only interface with hardware no longer in manufacture. UVolc will be described here, including a presentation of data collected with this program in the field.

Practical Volcano-Independent Recognition of Seismic Events: VULCAN.ears Project

2021

Recognizing the mechanisms underlying seismic activity and tracking temporal and spatial patterns of earthquakes represent primary inputs to monitor active volcanoes and forecast eruptions. To quantify this seismicity, catalogs are established to summarize the history of the observed types and number of volcano-seismic events. In volcano observatories the detection and posterior classification or labeling of the events is manually performed by technicians, often suffering a lack of unified criteria and eventually resulting in poorly reliable labeled databases. State-of-the-art automatic Volcano-Seismic Recognition (VSR) systems allow real-time monitoring and consistent catalogs. VSR systems…

Optimal Mass Transport on Metric Graphs

2015

We study an optimal mass transport problem between two equal masses on a metric graph where the cost is given by the distance in the graph. To solve this problem we find a Kantorovich potential as the limit of $p$-Laplacian--type problems in the graph where at the vertices we impose zero total flux boundary conditions. In addition, the approximation procedure allows us to find a transport density that encodes how much mass has to be transported through a given point in the graph, and also provides a simple formula of convex optimization for the total cost.

On-line database of voltammetric data of immobilized particles for identifying pigments and minerals in archaeometry, conservation and restoration (E…

2016

[EN] A web-based database of voltammograms is presented for characterizing artists' pigments and corrosion products of ceramic, stone and metal objects by means of the voltammetry of immobilized particles methodology. Description of the website and the database is provided. Voltammograms are, in most cases, accompanied by scanning electron microphotographs, X-ray spectra, infrared spectra acquired in attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy mode (ATR-FTIR) and diffuse reflectance spectra in the UV-Vis-region. For illustrating the usefulness of the database two case studies involving identification of pigments and a case study describing deterioration of an archae…

Classification of diabetes-related retinal diseases using a deep learning approach in optical coherence tomography

2019

Background and objectives: Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SD-OCT) is a volumetric imaging technique that allows measuring patterns between layers such as small amounts of fluid. Since 2012, automatic medical image analysis performance has steadily increased through the use of deep learning models that automatically learn relevant features for specific tasks, instead of designing visual features manually. Nevertheless, providing insights and interpretation of the predictions made by the model is still a challenge. This paper describes a deep learning model able to detect medically interpretable information in relevant images from a volume to classify diabetes-related retinal d…

LocalRec 2018 workshop report the second ACM SIGSPATIAL workshop on recommendations for location-based services and social networks * Seattle, Washin…

2019

Driven by technological advances in hardware (positioning systems, environmental sensors), software (standards, tools, network services), and aided by various open movements (open, linked, government data) and the ever-growing mentality of sharing for the greater good (crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, collaborative and volunteered geographic information), the amount of available geo-referenced data has seen dramatic explosion over the past few years. Human activities generate data and traces that are now often transparently annotated with location and contextual information. At the same time, it has become easier than ever to collect and combine rich and diverse information about locations. Exp…

Human Trafficking: The Viscous Link Between Vulnerability and Proximity Violence

2020

The definition of “human trafficking”, adopted by the United Nations Protocol, clearly describes how the international community has outlined the concepts of victim and perpetrator. Despite the definitive effort made by this Protocol, the present chapter seeks to throw light on the fuzzy area existing within the rapport between vulnerability and proximity violence which makes the consensual exploitation of the victim by the trafficker possible as well as making it difficult to outline its contours in the courtrooms.

One size hardly fits all

2013

This paper casts recent accomplishments in the field of Wireless MAC programmability into the emerging Software Defined Networking perspective. We argue that an abstract (but formal) description of the MAC protocol logic in terms of extensible finite state machines appears a convenient and viable data-plane programming compromise for modeling and deploying realistic MAC protocol logics. Our approach is shown to comply with existing control frameworks, and entails the ability to dynamically change the MAC protocol operation based on context and scenario conditions; in essence, move from the traditional idea of "one-size-fits-all" MAC protocol stack to the innovative paradigm of opportunistic…
