Influence of Soil Salinity on Sensory Characteristics and Volatile Aroma Compounds of Nero d’Avola Wine

The influence of soil salinity on the chemical composition, volatile aromatic compounds, and sensory characteristics of Nero d'Avola wine was examined. Data on vineyard productivity, such as grape yield, are also reported. Physicochemical parameters were determined on the samples analyzed. Solid-phase microextraction was used for the extraction of aromatic volatile compounds, followed by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Sensory analyses were performed by visual inspection, smelling, and tasting. Reversing agriculture from intensive to sustainable improves soil quality in a semiarid South Italian soil

Intensive agriculture (IA) is widespread in South Italy, although it requires frequent tillage, large amounts of fertilizers and irrigation water. We have assessed the efficacy of reversing IA to sustainable agriculture (SA) in recovering quality of a typical South Italy soil (Lithic Haploxeralf). This reversion, lasting from 2000 to 2007, replaced 75% of nutrients formerly supplied inorganically by farmyard manuring and reduced the tillage frequency. Salinization is a progressive soil and water degradation process. Soil salinity can be natural or induced by human affecting aquifers and the most productive irrigated agroecosystems in arid and semiarid regions, representing an increasing environmental concern. Root zone soil salinity can be managed using advanced tools and adjusting irrigation application and using the concept of leaching requirement. Abstract The semi-arid region of Bou Hajla (Kairouan – Central Tunisia) is exposed to the risk of soils and aquifers salinization. A characterization of water movement through the use of TDR probes installed at up to 4 m in depth, and of salts transfer by soil sampling was conducted to highlight this risk. At the same time, climatic parameters were monitored. The results were gathered over the period of approximately 1 year (June 12, 2006 to May 08, 2007).
