Involvement of nitrate reductase and pyoverdine in competitiveness of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain C7R12 in soil

ABSTRACT Involvement of nitrate reductase and pyoverdine in the competitiveness of the biocontrol strain Pseudomonas fluorescens C7R12 was determined, under gnotobiotic conditions, in two soil compartments (bulk and rhizosphere soil), with the soil being kept at two different values of matric potential (−1 and −10 kPa). Three mutants affected in the synthesis of either the nitrate reductase (Nar − ), the pyoverdine (Pvd − ), or both (Nar − Pvd − ) were used. Las principales conclusiones de la presente Tesis son: 1. Los valores de toxicidad establecidos para los diferentes suelos cultivados con lechuga de las diferentes regiones agrícolas mediterráneas consideradas abarcaron rangos similares, siendo de 8 a 752 mgCu/kg en la región española y de 49 a 728 mgCu/kg en la australiana. En ambos casos, el valor máximo se obtuvo para el suelo con el mayor pH y el mayor contenido en arcilla, independientemente del tipo de suelo. Por tanto, estas dos propiedades edáficas son muy relevantes a la hora de analizar y evaluar la movilidad y la disponibilidad del Cu en el suelo. Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus and Tomato yellow leaf curl virus have co-existed in Italian tomato crops since 2002 and have reached equilibrium, with plants hosting molecules of both species plus their recombinants being the most frequent case. Recombination events are studied in field samples, as well as in experimental co-infections, when recombinants were detected as early as 45 days following inoculation. ABSTRACT The presence of Ralstonia solanacearum biovar 2 in the watercourses of European countries is increasing, but little is known about its ecology in aquatic habitats. The detection of this pathogen in 2000 in one Spanish river led us to study its population density at different locations on the river over a period of 3 years. During 2000 and 2001, the pathogen was recovered at low densities (10 to 80 CFU/ml) by direct plating on modified SMSA agar from water samples at 14°C or higher, but its isolation was usually unsuccessful at temperatures below 9°C. Tunisian tomato by-products, as a potential source of natural bioactive compounds.

Consumption of tomato and tomato products is positively related to the reduction in cardiovascular disease and several types of cancer, thanks to the presence of natural compounds, such as antioxidants. Peels and seeds fractions of tomato, collected after industrial processing in Tunisian industries, were analysed for nutritional and antioxidants composition in perspective of its utilisation. Proximate composition, fatty acids profile, carotenoids, such as lycopene and beta-carotene, polyphenols contents, demonstrated the good potential of these residual products as a source of natural compounds, useful for food and nutraceuticals applications.

The complete nucleotide sequence of an isolate of Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus found in Sicily

Partial sequences of Tomato yellow leaf curl Sardinia virus (TYLCSV) derived from tomato samples collected in Sicily in 1999, 2002 and 2004 indicated the presence of a TYLCSV different from the one previously described as the Sic strain. Here, we report a complete DNA sequence that is classified as belonging to the TYLCSV type strain (Sar strain), confirming the co-existence in Sicily of virus populations of both strains. Moreover, comparisons between this new sequence and those of the two recombinants recently described in Sicily revealed unequivocally (99% identity) that their TYLCSV-derived portion originated from the Sar strain. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is one of the most important crops around the world and also a model plant to study response to stress. High-throughput sequencing was used to analyse the microRNA (miRNA) profile of tomato plants undergoing five biotic and abiotic stress conditions (drought, heat, P. syringae infection, B. cinerea infection, and herbivore insect attack with Leptinotarsa decemlineata larvae) and one chemical treatment with a plant defence inducer, hexanoic acid.
