Learning Dynamic Geometry: Implementing Rotations

This paper presents research in which we observed students of various ages and ability levels solving problems by using several pieces of software for solid geometry with different user interfaces. We evaluated the influence of the software on students’ learning, ways of reasoning, and the kind of mental images generated.

Boolean operations with implicit and parametric representation of primitives using R-functions

We present a new and efficient algorithm to accurately polygonize an implicit surface generated by multiple Boolean operations with globally deformed primitives. Our algorithm is special in the sense that it can be applied to objects with both an implicit and a parametric representation, such as superquadrics, supershapes, and Dupin cyclides. The input is a constructive solid geometry tree (CSG tree) that contains the Boolean operations, the parameters of the primitives, and the global deformations. Geometric and conceptual knowledge representation within a generative model of visual perception

A representation scheme of knowledge at both the geometric and conceptual levels is offered which extends a generative theory of visual perception. According to this theory, the perception process proceeds through different scene representations at various levels of abstraction. The geometric domain is modeled following the CSG (constructive solid geometry) approach, taking advantage of the geometric modelling scheme proposed by A. Pentland, based on superquadrics as representation primitives. Solutions to the 1-harmonic flow with values into a hyper-octant of the N-sphere

Abstract We announce existence results for the 1-harmonic flow from a domain of R m into the first hyper-octant of the N -dimensional unit sphere, under homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. The arguments rely on a notion of “geodesic representative” of a BV-vector field on its jump set.

Extending CSG with projections: Towards formally certified geometric modeling

We extend traditional Constructive Solid Geometry (CSG) trees to support the projection operator. Existing algorithms in the literature prove various topological properties of CSG sets. Our extension readily allows these algorithms to work on a greater variety of sets, in particular parametric sets, which are extensively used in CAD/CAM systems. Constructive Solid Geometry allows for algebraic representation which makes it easy for certification tools to apply. A geometric primitive may be defined in terms of a characteristic function, which can be seen as the zero-set of a corresponding system along with inequality constraints.
