Creation of paramagnetic defects by gamma irradiation in amorphous silica

2000

An electron spin resonance (ESR) study of the defects induced by γ-rays in various types of natural and synthetic silica is reported. Three main structures were identified: the E′ center and two doublets with field splitting of 7.4 and 11.8 mT, respectively, both centered around the E′ center signal. Another structure partially overlapping the E′ center line was also detected, consisting in three peaks with a maximum field splitting of 1.36 mT. We have investigated the growth kinetics of these centers on increasing the y-ray accumulated dose. In all investigated materials the growth of E′ centers can be interpreted as caused by γ-activated conversion of one or more precursors. The 1.36 mT s…

SPICE model for resistive gas and odour sensors

1999

A generalised PSPICE model of resistive gas/odour sensors is presented. The model simulates the response of both polymeric and metal oxide devices, as well as an integrated resistive heater that is used to set the operating temperature. In both cases there was good agreement between the observed responses and the PSPICE simulated responses to rectangular pulses of gases. The PSPICE model is not only simpler and faster to use than analytical solutions, but also should permit the rapid prototyping of associated drive circuitry.

Endoscopic treatment of intraluminal ureteral suture with holmium laser

2021

Although reconstructive surgery is the most accepted treatment for ureteral injury, there are reports of cases where endourologic treatment led to correct resolution of the problem. We present the case of a female patient aged 72-year-old who was previously underwent sacralcolpopexy because of anterior vaginal compartment prolapse. The patient underwent surgery to remove the mesh, due to the pain she had had since it was placed. A mid-line laparotomy was performed removing completely the mesh. At 48 hours after intervention, the patient started feeling an intense pain in the left renal fossa that was not relieved with anti-inflammatories and morphic drugs. In the diagnostic ureteroscopy, it…

Applicability of solid state fast field cycling NMR relaxometry in understanding relaxation properties of leaves and leaf-litters

2011

Abstract Inversion recovery high field solid state (SS) 1H NMR spectroscopy and fast field cycling (FFC) NMR relaxometry have been applied on dried leaves and leaf-litters from a reafforestated area in central Sicily (Italy) in order to evaluate relaxation properties in both slow ( 1 ≪ ω 0 2 τ C 2 ) and fast ( 1 ≫ ω 0 2 τ C 2 ) motion regimes. Namely, SS 1H NMR spectroscopy (i.e. slow motion regime conditions) revealed that two relaxation components (a fast and a slow one) can be identified in all the leaves and leaf-litter samples. The fast component was assigned to small sized plant metabolites, whereas the slow one was attributed to slowly tumbling macropolymeric molecules. FFC NMR relax…

Comparing different processing methods in apple slice drying. Part 2 solid-state Fast Field Cycling 1H-NMR relaxation properties, shrinkage and chang…

2019

The objective of this paper was to study the effects of different drying methods that are: microwave (MW), hot air (HA) and a combination of both (HY), on the 1H-NMR relaxation properties, shrinkage and volatile compounds of Golden Delicious apple slices. Fast field cycling NMR relaxometry reveals that the HA samples dried at different temperatures (65 and 75 °C) appear to contain less restrained water as compared to the sample obtained by MW heating at the same temperatures. In fact, the longitudinal relaxation rates (T1) of the water molecules in the HA dried slices resulted shorter than those measured for the MW dried samples, thereby revealing that in the MW slices, water molecules beha…

Phase-conjugate emission of a two-mirror solid state laser

2002

We show that phase conjugation strongly contributes to the emission of a solid state laser in a two-mirror (Fabry-Perot) resonator , enabling dynamic correction of thermal lensing . Full correction of thermal effects is reached by vector phase conjugation .

A rare case of solution and solid state inter-conversion of two copper(II) dimers and a copper(II) chain

2011

Abstract Three Cu(II)-azido complexes of formula [Cu2L2(N3)2] (1), [Cu2L2(N3)2]·H2O (2) and [CuL(N3)]n (3) have been synthesized using the same tridentate Schiff base ligand HL (2-[(3-methylaminopropylimino)-methyl]-phenol), the condensation product of N-methyl-1,3-propanediamine and salicyldehyde). Compounds 1 and 2 are basal-apical μ-1,1 double azido bridged dimers. The dimeric structure of 1 is centrosymmetric but that of 2 is non-centrommetric. Compound 3 is a μ-1,1 single azido bridged 1D chain. The three complexes interconvert in solution and can be obtained in pure form by carefully controlling the synthetic conditions. Compound 2 undergoes an irreversible transformation to 1 upon de…

Future directions in solid state chemistry: report of the NSF-sponsored workshop

2002

Abstract A long-established area of scientific excellence in Europe, solid state chemistry has emerged in the US in the past two decades as a field experiencing rapid growth and development. At its core, it is an interdisciplinary melding of chemistry, physics, engineering, and materials science, as it focuses on the design, synthesis and structural characterization of new chemical compounds and characterization of their physical properties. As a consequence of this inherently interdisciplinary character, the solid state chemistry community is highly open to the influx of new ideas and directions. The inclusionary character of the field’s culture has been a significant factor in its continu…

Al-27 and Si-29 Solid-State NMR Characterization of Calcium-Aluminosilicate-Hydrate

2012

International audience; Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main constituent of hydrated cement paste and determines its cohesive properties. Because of the environmental impact of cement industry, it is more and more common to replace a part of the clinker in cement by secondary cementitious materials (SCMs). These SCMs are generally alumina-rich and as a consequence some aluminum is incorporated into the C-S-H. This may have consequences on the cohesion and durability of the material, and it is thus of importance to know the amount and the location of Al in C-S-H and what the parameters are that control these features. The present paper reports the Si-29 and Al-27 MAS NMR analyses of …
