Preparation of photocatalysts by chemical methodologies
2021
Abstract The synthesis of photocatalytic materials is an important task for obtaining better results in terms of activity and/or selectivity in photocatalysis. This chapter reports an overview of the main methodologies using physical techniques to obtain bulky, supported powders or films and coatings to be used as heterogeneous photocatalysts. The classical chemical methodologies for the preparation of photocatalytic materials are presented in the previous chapter, so the information presented here complements the aforementioned one. Materials scientists and engineers have made significant progresses in the improvement of methods of synthesis of nanomaterial solids by developing different a…

The number …
Generalization of Shear Truss Model to the Case of SFRC Beams with Stirrups
2012
A theoretical model for shear strength evaluation of fibrous concrete beams reinforced with stirrups is proposed. The formulation is founded on the theory of plasticity and the stress field concepts, generalizing a known plastic model for calculating the bearing capacity of reinforced concrete beams, to the case of fibrous concrete. The beneficial effect of steel fibres is estimated taking into account the residual tensile strength of fibrous concrete, by modifying an analytical constitutive law which presents a plastic plateau as a post-peak branch. Around fifty results of experimental tests carried out on steel fibrous concrete beams available in the literature were collected, and a compa…
Occupational hygiene in a waste incineration plant
2003
Abstract The Turku incineration plant was renovated in 1995 to meet the emission requirements of modern waste combustion facilities. It treats presorted municipal waste from 170,000 residents in the Turku area. In the plant, the incineration process produces several types of by-products having importance in terms of occupational hygiene. Although not obligated by the law, the management of the plant has a keen interest in occupational hygiene at the plant, which was studied from 1998 to 2001. Concentrations of microbes, endotoxins, and dust and the noise level were investigated in three different working areas. Microbe measurements were conducted with a six-stage impactor and using the CAMN…
Control of solid-state fault current limiter for DG-integrated distribution systems
2017
Fault current limier (FCL) is a device that limits the system current under fault conditions without disconnecting the system and affecting the power system protection components such as circuit breakers. Many types of FCLs have been proposed to limit the magnitude of the fault current. Solid-state fault current limiters (SSFCLs) can limit the peak value of the fault current by applying several methods, such as controlling the system impedance or controlling the voltage that appears across the fault. In this paper, a new control scheme for the SSFCL circuit is presented. The control method is based on controlling the duty cycle of solid state switches to control the rms value of the system …
Optimizing the Methodology of Characterization of Municipal Solid Waste in EU under a Circular Economy Perspective
2017
Abstract The methodology for the characterization of residual municipal solid waste (RMSW) is available since decades. Some modifications have been introduced in order to modernize it. Now, in order to take into account the targets of the circular economy, an additional effort must be made to be sure of generating the right information suitable for the optimization of municipal solid waste in that frame. In that perspective, the Authors present a few proposals in order to avoid mistakes and to deepen the reliability of the data generated during the analysis performed to classify the residual municipal solid waste in fractions. A new model of characterization is thus proposed, suitable for p…
Surveying, Analysis and 3D Modeling in Archaeological Virtual Reconstruction. The inner colonnade of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte.
2012
This paper is focused on the virtual reconstruction of a portion of the naos of Temple G of Selinunte, as a case study for the definition of a method of virtual anastylosis and reconstruction of collapsed colonnades in archaeological contexts. Reconstruction is based on the combination of historical research, archaeological analysis, digital surveying, image-based modeling and laser scanning methods. The complexity of the ruins of the temple suggested a thorough archaeological analysis of the fragments of the inner colonnade of the naos. This analysis made it possible to identify reference surfaces and protective or sacrificial surfaces. The study of these surfaces, together with the dimens…
Design and characterization of the SiPM tracking system of NEXT-DEMO, a demonstrator prototype of the NEXT-100 experiment
2013
NEXT-100 experiment aims at searching the neutrinoless double-beta decay of the Xe-136 isotope using a TPC filled with a 100 kg of high-pressure gaseous xenon, with 90% isotopic enrichment. The experiment will take place at the Laboratorio Subterraneo de Canfranc (LSC), Spain. NEXT-100 uses electroluminescence (EL) technology for energy measurement with a resolution better than 1% FWHM. The gaseous xenon in the TPC additionally allows the tracks of the two beta particles to be recorded, which are expected to have a length of up to 30 cm at 10 bar pressure. The ability to record the topological signature of the beta beta 0 nu events provides a powerful background rejection factor for the bet…
El libro y la lectura en Valencia (1300-1410). Notas para su estudio
2020
Through this article, we try to underline some aspects related to the research undertaken on the book and its different uses. We have centred our attention on the social meanings of possessing a book for private individuals: the book as an instrument of work and/ or study, the book for entertainment, etc. Every single one attests to an attitude of the individual as regards the Written Culture and, above all, the role of the latter in the consolidation of a social status.
