Are "good guys" more likely to participate in local agriculture?

2015

Abstract In recent years a new form of food production and distribution organisation, as part of small-scale and local agriculture, has been gaining ground. Generically termed short supply chains (SSCs), this new model of food procurement comprises various forms such as community-supported agriculture, box schemes and solidarity purchase groups. Consumer participation in SSCs is dictated by deep motivations: while consumers are principally encouraged by the desire to preserve local producers, as well as the social and environmental aspects of farming, the attraction of SSCs is also tied to different and more complex ways of perceiving food quality. The quality issue in SSCs is not only seen…

A new approach to studying sponge cake aroma after storage in treated paper and plastic packaging by direct gas chromatography–olfactometry (D-GC–O)

2007

The objective of this study was to use D-GC–O to compare the global odour of a sponge cake flavoured with either a ‘viennoiserie’ aromatic note or a simplified mixture of aroma compounds (used for physicochemical studies), then stored in a glass packaging (inert and impermeable) or in pouches made with treated papers or with plastic packaging, in accelerated ageing conditions (high temperature and relative humidity gradient). After 1 week of storage, the flavoured sponge cake headspace was SPME-extracted directly into the packaging and analysed by D-GC–O. The sponge cake global odour was better retained if plastic film rather than treated-papers was used, for both flavourings. Changes in th…

Evaluation of matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) extraction for multi-mycotoxin determination in different flours using LC-MS/MS

2011

An existing matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) method for aflatoxins (AFs) and ochratoxin A (OTA) extraction was extended by further 14 mycotoxins. After it careful optimization, this method was applied to determine the occurrence of these mycotoxins on commercial flour samples (with different cereals composition) collected from local markets. In a total of 49 samples investigated, 9 mycotoxins were identified. Nivalenol (NIV) and Beauvericin (BEA) were the mycotoxins found most frequently. The samples that presented major contamination were wheat flours and bakery preparations. Despite of the great number of positives finding, only one wheat flour sample exceeded the maximum limits (ML) …

Application of hybrid linear ion trap-high resolution mass spectrometry to the analysis of mycotoxins in beer

2011

This paper reports the application of liquid chromatography electrospray ionization ion trap-orbitrap mass spectrometry for the determination of 18 mycotoxins (aflatoxins, fumonisins, trichothecenes, ochratoxin A, sterogmatocystin, beauvaricin, zearalenone and zearalenol) in beer. The extraction procedure was carried out by solid phase extraction (SPE): SPE columns were conditioned with acetonitrile/methanol and water. Beer was loaded onto the column which was washed with water. In these conditions, the recoveries were more than 65% and the relative standard deviation (RSD) were below 18%. The lowest limits of quantification (LLOQ) ranged from 9 to 155 ng ml(-1). Matrix-matched calibration …

New method for determination of ochratoxin A in beer using zinc acetate and solid-phase extraction silica cartridges

2006

Abstract A new method for the determination of ochratoxin A (OTA) in beer has been developed. The new method has been compared with a reference method currently accepted as AOAC official first action. The limits of detection and quantification of the proposed method were 0.0008 and 0.0025 ng/ml, respectively, while they were 0.0025 and 0.0075 ng/ml, respectively, in the AOAC method used as reference. The recovery levels in the 0.025–0.40 ng OTA/ml spiking range for the proposed and the reference methods were 80.6–87.6% and 78.2–83.8%, respectively. The relative standard deviations of recoveries were 2.6–7.5% for the proposed method and 0.7–6.1% for the reference method. Passing and Bablok r…

Bimodal copper oxide nanoparticles doped phase for the extraction of highly polar compounds by in-tube solid-phase microextraction coupled on-line to…

2020

Abstract Polymers obtained from tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and triethoxymethylsilane (MTEOS) have been functionalized with different metal and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs), and used as coatings of extractive capillaries for the extraction of polar compounds by in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME) coupled on-line to nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC). The extraction capabilities of the new phases have been studied using several triazinic herbicides with log of octanol/water partition coefficients (Kow) ranging from -0.7 to 3.21 under reversed phase chromatographic conditions. Best extraction efficiencies for the most polar compounds (log Kow ≤ 2.3) were typically obtained …

Conventional induction and post-remission therapy in APL: have we arrived?

2014

Since the introduction of all-trans-retinoic acid, the use of this molecularly targeted treatment in combination with anthracycline-based chemotherapy has completely changed the prognosis of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) turning it into the most curable acute myeloid leukemia. Also, the use of risk-adapted protocols has optimized the drug combination and the most appropriate dose intensity for each subset of patients classified according to both risk of relapse and vulnerability to drug toxicity. Recent developments have included the investigation of the role of arsenic trioxide (ATO) as front-line treatment after its success in relapsed APL, both to minimize or even omit the use of cy…
