A neural network clustering algorithm for the ATLAS silicon pixel detector

2014

A novel technique to identify and split clusters created by multiple charged particles in the ATLAS pixel detector using a set of artificial neural networks is presented. Such merged clusters are a common feature of tracks originating from highly energetic objects, such as jets. Neural networks are trained using Monte Carlo samples produced with a detailed detector simulation. This technique replaces the former clustering approach based on a connected component analysis and charge interpolation. The performance of the neural network splitting technique is quantified using data from proton-proton collisions at the LHC collected by the ATLAS detector in 2011 and from Monte Carlo simulations. …

Identification of Volatile Compounds in Blackcurrant Berries: Differences Among Cultivars

2021

Berries of blackcurrant are known to produce a strong flavor. Some previous studies have reported that a given cultivar of blackcurrant can produce berries with a specific profile of volatile compounds. For the Burgundy region in France, the Noir de Bourgogne cultivar is especially important because it is the main ingredient of a liquor with a designation of origin. The aim of the present study was to characterize the volatile fractions of berries from 15 cultivars in order to explore the possibility of using different cultivars for liquor production. The plants were cultivated under the same conditions and harvested in the same year. The volatile fractions of the harvested berries were ana…

Solid Contact Potentiometric Sensors Based on a New Class of Ionic Liquids on Thiacalixarene Platform

2018

New solid-contact potentiometric sensors have been developed for hydrogen phosphate recognition on the basis of ionic liquids containing tetrasubstituted derivatives of thiacalix[4]arene in cone and 1,3-alternate conformations with trimethyl- and triethylammonium fragments at the lower rim substituents. The recognition of selected anions including carbonate, hydrogen phosphate, perchlorate, oxalate, picrate, and EDTA was conducted using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy with ferricyanide redox probe. For the potentiometric sensor assembling, the ionic liquids were stabilized by multiwalled carbon nanotubes and carbon black deposited on the glassy carbon electrode. The influence of supp…

Shakedown of Structures Subjected to Dynamic External Actions and Related Bounding Techniques

2002

The shakedown theory for dynamic external actions is expounded considering elastic-plastic internal-variable material models endowed with hardening saturation surface and assuming small displacements and strains as long with negligible effects of temperature variations on material data. Two sorts of dynamic shakedown theories are presented, i.e.: i) Unrestricted dynamic shakedown, in which the structure is subjected to (unknown) sequences of short-duration excitations belonging to a known excitation domain, with no-load no-motion time periods in between and for which a unified framework with quasi-static shakedown is presented; and ii) Restricted dynamic shakedown, in which the structure is…

The Painted Silk Panels of Palazzo Barberini at Rome. The Scientific Investigation and Preservation Challenge

2013

Abstract This paper reports the study carried out on the 18th century painted silk panels that cover the walls of the so called Salotto delle sete dipinte in Palazzo Barberini at Rome on the occasion of the conservation work started in 2007. Microscope and spectroscopy investigations were performed in order to study the materials and the realization techniques of the painted silk panels and to evaluate the conservation conditions. Moreover ageing tests were performed in order to evaluate the stability of the consolidant/protective product used for the silk panels.

Axial dispersion model for solid flow in liquid suspension in system of two mixers in total recycle

2006

The measurement of residence time distribution of solid particles in solid-liquid suspension is experimentally difficult. However, the twin system approach is particularly suited for the assessment of particle RTD in flow systems as it allows overcoming some of the usual difficulties generally encountered in this kind of measurement. Twin system consists of two vessels and external piping in total recycle. Experimental results from this system can be evaluated using Z-transforms to derive particle RTD for subsequent testing of alternative flow models. Recently, the axial dispersion model was applied using the "advection diffusion equation" (sometimes called the"diffusion with bulk flow equa…

Bi3+doping in 1D ((CH3)3SO)PbI3: A model for defect interactions in halide perovskites

2022

The recently described monodimensional hybrid pseudo-perovskite ((CH3)3SO)PbI3 exhibits complete Pb2+/Bi3+ miscibility in the B site. Heterovalent substitution imposes that charge-compensating defects are introduced in the lattice as well. This paper reports the energetics of point defects and the interaction between charge-compensating defects that occur upon Bi3+ doping in ((CH3)3SO)PbI3. Periodic DFT simulations were employed to analyze the formation energy of Pb2+ vacancies, (CH3)3SO+ vacancies, iodide vacancies, or the insertion of interstitial iodide ions. Solid solutions with a large Bi3+ content were modeled considering different charge compensation defects (Pb2+ vacancies, (CH3)3SO…

‘I think I will need help’: A systematic review of who facilitates the recovery from gender‐based violence and how they do so

2020

Context A key to advancing the eradication of gender-based violence (GBV) is knowing how to recover from it. Objective To identify the changes that are indicators of having overcome GBV and determine the role of various support networks. Search strategy We systematically searched Web of Science. Inclusion criteria Publications whose abstracts contained a minimum of two of the following words: (a) support or network or solidarity, (b) violence and (c) recovery or healing. Data extraction and synthesis Of the 273 documents retrieved, 52 were used using a narrative synthesis approach. Main results For recovery, women must reconnect with themselves, with their environment and with the world in …

Conclusion and Discussion

2021

It would seem that European Politics are currently enrolled in a constant flux of uncertainty and anxiousness. The Institutional Matrix and Community of states that make up the Union seemingly cannot catch a break as they meander through a succession of crises and challenges. These are taking their toll on the EU, its unity in decision making, and countries’ commitment to ever closer Union. The sovereign debt crisis and so-called Greek Euro Crisis shook the tacit belief in the current economic architecture of the bloc and questioned the belief in intra-European solidarity. Shortly thereafter, the refugee crisis saw European States adopt ad hoc and sometimes contradictory measures for border…
