The occurrence and sources of 21 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs: C4-C14, C16, C18 carboxylate, C4, C6-C8 and C10 sulfonates and C8 sulfonamide) were determined in water, sediment, and biota of the Llobregat River basin (NE Spain). Analytes were extracted by solid phase extraction (SPE) and determined by liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (LC-QqQ-MS). All samples were contaminated with at least one PFAS, being the most frequently found perfluorobutanoate (PFBA), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (L-PFOS). As the number of legal and illegal gold mining sites increases in the Andes–Amazonia region, integrative methods to evaluate the effects of mining pollution on freshwater ecosystems are of paramount importance. Abstract Hyphenated techniques involving mass spectrometry (MS) such as ICP-MS, GC–MS and LC–MS are the most powerful tools for both qualitative and quantitative characterization of metals and organic pollutants in previously dissolved or extracted samples. However a considerable analytical effort is required in developing simple and general sample preparation strategies for the complete characterization of toxic substances in solid wastes and soils. This article gives a critical review of the state-of-the-art and future perspectives for rapid procedures to evaluate the pollution of soils and sediments, also considering new alternatives like flow injection analysis–MS and direct sampling MS.

Abstract In this work, a monolithic polymer based on poly(methacrylic acid-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (MAA-co-EDMA) was prepared inside 200 μL pipette tips for the extraction of drug of abuse from oral fluid samples. After an appropriate surface tip modification, several polymerization mixtures with different monomer/cross-linker ratios, and percentage of porogen were studied. This paper presents a study on the use of acoustic emission (AE) to assess the structural soundness of concrete reinforced with chemically bonded anchors. The results of an experimental work based on six pullout tests monitored using an AE instrumentation suite are reported below. In every test one rebar was embedded in the hardened concrete by means of polyester resin. The AE was adopted to moni- tor the onset and progression of any structural damage. The results of a complex study of structural changes in a cured Norpol 440 polyester resin under the action of damp environment and mechanical loading are presented. A considerable effect of absorbed moisture on the structure and some characteristics of the material is revealed by using thermophysical methods and X-ray diffractometry. Synthesis and properties of some new polyesters of 10, 12-docosadiyn-1, 22-diol are described. The diyn-polyesters as films became coloured polydiacetylenic films on exposure to UV radiation and their properties were studied.

Two examples of the application of the Continuous Cooling Transformation (CCT) method for investigating polymer solidification under processing conditions are illustrated. One example concerns the solidification behaviour of syndiotactic polystyrene (sPS) from the melt, showing an anomalous trend of density versus cooling rate, exhibiting a minimum around 1 °C/s. Once phase composition is obtained from WAXD deconvolution, density can be closely predicted, its minimum depending on the competition among crystalline phases upon increasing cooling rate.
