A Study on Plastic Shakedown of Structures: Part II—Theorems
1993
For a continuous elastic-perfectly plastic solid body subjected to a combination of cyclic (mechanical and/or kinematical) load and of a steady (mechanical) load, two theorems of plastic shakedown are presented, one stating a necessary condition, another stating a sufficient condition. The problem of the direct determination of the plastic shakedown boundary is also briefly addressed.

Instabilities of the deformation process in cold drawing of poly(ethylene terephthalate) and other polymers
1981
The relationship between drawing rate and drawing stress was studied for amorphous poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) under various experimental conditions. Three types of expriments were performed: simple drawing with necking at constant rate, drawing through a conical die, and drawing at constant stress. Under constant stress conditions a transition between two stable regimes of drawing can be observed. The transition occurs at a critical stress σc at which the rate of neck propagation changes by some orders of magnitude. Such a transition was found both below and above the glass transition of PET. With constant drawing rates instabilities of neck propagation were observed under certain e…
Shear strength of a compacted scaly clay in variable saturation conditions
2015
Scaly clays are stiff and highly fissured clays often used as construction materials. This paper presents the results of triaxial compression tests carried out on saturated and unsaturated samples of a compacted scaly clay. Complementary investigation on the microstructural features and their evolution with the amount of water stored into the material are also presented in order to shed light on the evolution of the micro- and macroporosity with suction. The water retention behaviour of the compacted scaly clay is also addressed. The results from the controlled suction triaxial tests are used to discuss the applicability of a single-shear strength criterion to compacted double-structured cl…
Trapping Amorphous Intermediates of Carbonates – A Combined Total Scattering and NMR Study
2018
Crystallization via metastable phases plays an important role in chemical manufacturing, biomineralization, and protein crystallization, but the kinetic pathways leading from metastable phases to the stable crystalline modifications are not well understood. In particular, the fast crystallization of amorphous intermediates makes a detailed characterization challenging. To circumvent this problem, we devised a system that allows trapping and stabilizing the amorphous intermediates of representative carbonates (calcium, strontium, barium, manganese, and cadmium). The long-term stabilization of these transient species enabled a detailed investigation of their composition, structure, and morpho…

Study of low-pressure suspension plasma spray nanostructured coating : structural characteristics and application in solid oxide fuel cell
2021
Suspension plasma spraying (SPS) has attracted more and more attention in terms of the preparation of nanostructured / sub-microstructured ceramic coatings. However, conventional SPS techniques are conducted under atmospheric pressure, which inevitably causes some disadvantages. Recently, a novel suspension spraying technology – low-pressure suspension plasma spraying (LPSPS) – was proposed, in which the sus-pension spraying process is conducted under low environmental pressure. Benefit from the significant impact of low pressure on the coating deposition, LPSPS is expected to improve the disadvantage of SPS as well as to obtain distinct coating structures not achievable in conventional SPS…

Dielectric and Elastic Parameters of LixNa1-xTa0.1Nb0.9O3 Ferroelectric Solid Solution Ceramics
2011
Results of the studies of electric and elastic parameters as functions of concentration in ferroelectric LiхNa1-хTa0.1Nb0.9O3 (x = 0–0.16) solid solutions and comparative studies of the elastic properties by acoustic and contact probe techniques are reported. The electric and elastic properties of LiхNa1-хTa0.1Nb0.9O3 solid solutions are shown to be rather sensitive to structural distortion at concentration-induced structural phase transitions. The values of elastic modules obtained from acoustic measurements are found to be in good agreement with those obtained by contact probe techniques.
Digital Technologies for virtual recomposition. The case study of Serpotta stuccoes.
2014
The matter that lies beneath the smooth and shining surface of stuccoes of the Serpotta family, who used to work in Sicily from 1670 to 1730, has been thoroughly studied in previous papers, disclosing the deep, even if empirical, knowledge of materials science that guided the artists in creating their masterworks. In this work the attention is focused on the solid perspective and on the scenographic sculpture by Giacomo Serpotta, who is acknowledged as the leading exponent of the School. The study deals with some particular works of the artist, the so-called “teatrini” (Toy Theater), made by him for the San Lorenzo Oratory in Palermo. On the basis of archive documents and previous analogica…
