Abstract. Eleven particle samples collected in the polar stratosphere during SOLVE (SAGE III Ozone loss and validation experiment) from January until March 2000 were characterized in detail by high-resolution transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM/SEM) combined with energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis. A total of 4202 particles (TEM = 3872; SEM = 330) were analyzed from these samples, which were collected mostly inside the polar vortex in the altitude range between 17.3 and 19.9 km. Particles that were volatile in the microscope beams contained ammonium sulfates and hydrogen sulfates and dominated the samples. Some particles with diameters ranging from 20 to 830 nm were re…
Measurement of untruncated nuclear spin interactions via zero- to ultralow-field nuclear magnetic resonance
2015
Zero- to ultra-low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (ZULF NMR) provides a new regime for the measurement of nuclear spin-spin interactions free from effects of large magnetic fields, such as truncation of terms that do not commute with the Zeeman Hamiltonian. One such interaction, the magnetic dipole-dipole coupling, is a valuable source of spatial information in NMR, though many terms are unobservable in high-field NMR, and the coupling averages to zero under isotropic molecular tumbling. Under partial alignment, this information is retained in the form of so-called residual dipolar couplings. We report zero- to ultra-low-field NMR measurements of residual dipolar couplings in acetonitrile…

Reactivity of H2S and H2S/H2 Mixture With Molybdenum Oxide Thin Films Epitaxied on CoO (100) : Characterization by Rheed and Auger Spectroscopy
2010
Molybdenum-Cobalt composite oxide films were prepared by the evaporation of molybdenum trioxide on a fresh cleaved CoO (100) surface (Thickness = 10 A). The MoO3-CoO interface has been characterized simultaneously by reflexion high electron diffraction (RHEED) and Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). The thin film structure and composition depend on the annealing temperature. After a 300°C treatment, metallic cobalt islands nucleate at the interface thin film - CoO (100) and crystallize with the cubic FCC symmetry. After a 700°C treatment cobalt molybdate (a CoMoO4) islands grow. The metastable crystallites are epitaxied on CoO (100). After a 900°C treatment, the thin film consists of flat tw…
Microstructural evolution of wear-resistant FeCrB and FeCrNiCoB coating alloys during high-energy mechanical attrition
2008
Mechanical milling/attrition provides a convenient scope of simulating the microstructural changes encountered by wear-resistant coating alloys subjected to deformation under high frequency and high-intensity impact loading or accelerated wear condition. In the present study, the microstructural evolution of two commercial coating materials, FeCrB (Armacor M) and FeCrNiCoB (Armacor C), in the course of low- and high-intensity mechanical attrition, was monitored by X-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. While low-intensity milling leads to marginal grain refinement but no change in phase-aggregate in FeCrB, similar mechanical attrition causes boride precipita…
Simplified analytical model for moment–axial force domain in the presence of shear in R.C. members externally strengthened with steel cages
2015
Equations for a hand calculation of moment–axial force domain in the presence of shear for R.C. beam/column externally strengthened with steel angles and strips are developed. The analytical derivation is made assuming, for axial load and flexure, the equivalent stress-block parameters for internal forces, considering the confinement effects induced in the concrete core by external cages both in the cases of strips or angles yielding. Limit states due to bond failure, concrete crushing and yielding of steel angles and strips in flexure and in shear, including moment-to-shear interaction, are considered. The proposed model gives results in a good agreement with available experimental data an…
Solution versus Fluorous versus Solid-Phase Synthesis of 2,5-Disubstituted 1,3-Azoles. Preliminary Antibacterial Activity Studies
2009
A small library of compounds with an oxa(thia)zole scaffold and structural diversity in both positions 2 and 5 has been synthesized. Double acylation of a protected glycine affords intermediate α-amido-β-ketoesters, which in turn can be dehydrated to afford 1,3-oxazoles or reacted with Lawesson’s reagent to furnish 1,3-thiazoles. This procedure was designed with its adaptation to fluorous techniques in mind. Thus, when a protected glycine with a fluorous tag in the ester moiety is used as a starting material, the synthesis can be easily completed without column chromatography purification of intermediate compounds with good to excellent yields, thus affording a suitable entry to the prepara…
Bile acid–cysteamine conjugates: Structural properties, gelation, and toxicity evaluation
2011
Abstract Design, synthesis, and characterization of six novel bile acid–cysteamine conjugates together with investigation of their structural studies, gelation properties, and preliminary toxicity evaluation, are reported. Solid state properties of selected compounds were studied by means of X-ray diffraction and 13C CPMAS NMR spectroscopy. N-(2-thioethyl)-3α,7α,12α-trihydroxy-5β-cholan-24-amide was shown to exhibit (pseudo)polymorphism, and a single crystal structure of its non-stoichiometric hydrate is reported herein. Cholyl and dehydrocholyl derivatives bearing three functionalities in their steroidal backbone were shown to undergo self-assembly leading to gelation in certain organic so…
High temperature solid-catalized transesterification for biodiesel production
2010
Biodiesel has become more attractive recently because of its environmental benefits and the fact that it is made from renewable resources. Biodiesel is a mixture of monoalkyl esters of long chain fatty acids derived from renewable feed stock like vegetable oils and animal fats, mainly made of fatty acid glycerides. It is produced by transesterification processes in which oil or fat are reacted with a monohydric alcohol in the presence of a catalyst. The transesterification process is affected by reaction conditions, alcohol to oil molar ratio, type of alcohol, type and amount of catalysts, temperature and purity of reactants. Heterogeneous acid catalysts are quite efficient in promoting the…
Fundamentals and applications of stir bar sorptive dispersive microextraction: A tutorial review
2021
Current trends in sample preparation focus on the miniaturization of the process resulting in what is known as microextraction techniques. Among them stir bar sorptive dispersive microextraction (SBSDME) is one of the most recent techniques. It was presented a few years ago as a hybrid microextraction technique that combines the principles of stir bar sorptive extraction (SBSE) and dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE). This novel technique introduces, into the sample solution, a bar-shaped magnet coated with a magnetic (nano)material, which is maintained on the surface by magnetism. Once stirring starts, the competitive action between magnetism and rotational force is exploited. At low …
