Route to chaos in the weakly stratified Kolmogorov flow
2019
We consider a two-dimensional fluid exposed to Kolmogorov’s forcing cos(ny) and heated from above. The stabilizing effects of temperature are taken into account using the Boussinesq approximation. The fluid with no temperature stratification has been widely studied and, although relying on strong simplifications, it is considered an important tool for the theoretical and experimental study of transition to turbulence. In this paper, we are interested in the set of transitions leading the temperature stratified fluid from the laminar solution [U∝cos(ny),0, T ∝ y] to more complex states until the onset of chaotic states. We will consider Reynolds numbers 0 < Re ≤ 30, while the Richardson numb…
An evaluation of solid phase microextraction for aliphatic amines using derivatization with 9-fluorenylmethyl chloroformate and liquid chromatography
2005
The reliability of SPME combined with a chemical reaction for the analysis of short-chain aliphatic amines by liquid chromatography has been investigated. Different options to couple SPME and derivatization have been tested and compared: (i) derivatization of the analytes in solution followed by the extraction of the derivatives, (ii) extraction of the analytes and subsequent derivatization by immersing the SPME fibre onto a solution of the reagent, and (iii) extraction/derivatization of the analytes using fibres previously coated with the reagent. Methylamine (MA), dimethylamine (DMA) and trimethylamine (TMA) have been selected as a model of primary, secondary and tertiary amines, respecti…
Some regularity results on the ‘relativistic’ heat equation
2008
AbstractWe prove some partial regularity results for the entropy solution u of the so-called relativistic heat equation. In particular, under some assumptions on the initial condition u0, we prove that ut(t) is a Radon measure in RN. Moreover, if u0 is log-concave inside its support Ω, Ω being a convex set, then we show the solution u(t) is also log-concave in its support Ω(t). This implies its smoothness in Ω(t). In that case we can give a simpler characterization of the notion of entropy solution.
Special Issue: Enhancing Sustainable Performance in Organizational and Inter-Institutional Systems
2013
Sustainability is not just for Christmas… it’s for life. Sustainable solutions, whether sought in terms of business strategies, social policies, or the exploitation of natural resources have to serve organizations and communities in the long term, sometimes very long term, as well as the short term. Static analysis is unlikely to be able to evaluate candidate solutions fully, and is more likely to focus on the short-term future to the detriment of the longer-term. Sustainable solutions are more likely to be developed from studies based on deep analysis using systems approaches, and from system dynamics (SD) approaches in particular.
Interactions between glyphosate and autochthonous soil fungi surviving in aqueous solution of glyphosate
2007
The survival of autochthonous fungi in soil treated with 1mM aqueous solution of glyphosate was investigated. Significant differences in the total number of fungi in the studied objects were observed, and additionally significant qualitative changes were encountered. The dominating group of fungi belonged to genus Fusarium: Fusarium solani H30, Fusarium solani H50 and Fusarium oxysporum H80. Interactions between the isolated strains of fungi and varying concentrations of glyphosate were determined. The studied strains possessed high tolerance against the applied doses of glyphosate (0.5-2.0 mM). In the presence of glyphosate (as a sole source of phosphorus) applied in concentrations of 1.0-…
Water and temperature contribution to the structuration of starch matrices in the presence of flavour.
2016
The effect of hydrothermal treatments and flavours addition on starch structure and its physical properties were studied. Native wheat starch was treated at 2 different hydrations (water-starch ratios: 50/50 and 80/20 g w/w) and temperatures (65 and 85 °C) in the presence of flavours (ethyl hexanoate and 2-hexanone). The freshly prepared samples were subjected to DSC and flavour analysis. Flavour inclusion complex could not be detected by DSC, however the result of flavour analysis proved that there were flavours interactions with starch. Both ethyl hexanoate and 2-hexanone interacted with starch at similar rates. The highest flavour loss was found in the samples at high hydration and heate…
5-Substituted-benzylsulfanyl-thiophene-2-sulfonamides with effective carbonic anhydrase inhibitory activity: Solution and crystallographic investigat…
2017
Abstract A series of 5-substituted-benzylsulfanyl-thiophene-2-sulfonamides was prepared by reacting 5-bromo-thiophene-2-sulfonamide with 5-substituted-benzyl mercaptans. The new compounds were investigated as carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) inhibitors. The cytosolic human (h) isoforms hCA I was poorly inhibited by the new sulfonamides (KIs in the range of 683–4250 nM), whereas hCA II, and the transmembrane, tumor associated isoforms hCA IX and XII were effectively inhibited in the subnanomolar–nanomolar range. A high resolution X-ray crystal structure of the adduct of hCA II with one of the new sulfonamides allowed us to rationalize the excellent inhibitory activity of these heterocycli…
Ultrasound-assisted MnO2 catalyzed homolysis of peracetic acid for phenol degradation: The assessment of process chemistry and kinetics
2013
Abstract The combination of peracetic acid (PAA) and heterogeneous catalyst (MnO 2 ) was used for the degradation of phenol in an aqueous solution in the presence of ultrasound irradiation (US). As a relevant source of free radicals (e.g. OH), peracetic acid was comprehensively studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping (ST) techniques with the subsequent identification of free radicals by simulation based fitting (SBF) technique. The radical reaction mechanism, where hydroxyl radical was a primary product of O O bond rupture of PAA, was established taking into account radical reactions, occurring during sonolysis. The potential barriers and the reaction heat were deter…
Solutions for parametric double phase Robin problems
2021
We consider a parametric double phase problem with Robin boundary condition. We prove two existence theorems. In the first the reaction is ( p − 1 )-superlinear and the solutions produced are asymptotically big as λ → 0 + . In the second the conditions on the reaction are essentially local at zero and the solutions produced are asymptotically small as λ → 0 + .
