"Vaikka mä oon tulkki, niin mä oon ihminen" : somalinaistulkkien näkemyksiä asioimistulkin työstä
2013
2010

Somaliland's investment in peace : analysing the diaspora's economic engagement in peace building
2010
Introduction: Since 1991 the people of Somaliland have successfully established a peaceful and relatively stable state and community. They have managed a process of reconciliation, demobilized the local militias, restored law and order, and held three rounds of peaceful elections. Much of the urban infrastructure and basic social services destroyed during the war (1988-1991) have been re-established. Peace and stability allowed normal patterns of trade and other economic activities to resume, and thousands of refugees came back from neighbouring countries. However, despite being the most stable polity within the territory of the former Somali Republic, Somaliland has not been recognized int…
Diasporic engagement in the educational sector in post-conflict Somaliland : a contribution to peacebuilding
2010
This working paper provides a background to the rebuilding of the educational sector in Somaliland, which had been completely destroyed during the civil war, developed again from very modest beginnings in the early 1990s, and includes manifold offers up to tertiary education a decade later. Arguably, the educational boom in the country is part of the second phase of peacebuilding, which began around 1997 and still continues. It involves extensive diasporic investments in the form of economic and social remittances. The case-study section in the second half of the paper presents two universities founded by diaspora and local actors. These universities are located in quite different regions o…
Diasporas and their role in the homeland conflicts and peacebuilding : the case of Somali diaspora
2010
I began collecting data for this paper almost two years ago at a time when the role of the Somali diaspora was intensely debated both within and outside the country. In these debates the potential contribution of Somali diaspora is presented in two forms. Firstly, within and outside the academic circles, the role of Somali diaspora is described as potential contributors to the ongoing conflict in Somalia and as spoilers. There are several reasons for this assertion. Proponents of this argument see the enormous size of remittances sent by the Somali diaspora to their country of origin coupled with the lack of oversight and absence of monitoring capabilities of these remittances both at the s…
Engagement dynamics between diasporas and settlement country institutions : Somalis in Italy and Finland
2010
This study presents a comparative work on engagement dynamics occurring between the Somali diaspora1 and authorities in two countries of settlement, namely Italy and Finland. The analysis focuses on cooperation dynamics, on the one hand looking at how ‘external actors’ (governmental and non governmental)2 attempt to engage diaspora in development and peacebuilding in Somalia, and on the other hand how the diaspora3 attempts to get support from external actors for their efforts in development and peacebuilding in the country of origin4 The cross country comparison between Somali diaspora engagement strategies in Italy and Finland responds to the following three research questions: . 1. Which…
Somali Associations’ Trajectories in Italy and in Finland: Leaders building trust and finding legitimisation
2013
Previous research on migrant associations has explained their formation and maintenance by highlighting migrant groups' cultural characteristics or the political opportunity structures (POS) available in the countries of settlement. Past research has also focused on associations in relation to migrants' political participation in the countries of settlement, applying the notion of social capital. The aim of this article is to enrich the debate on migrant associations by analysing their trajectories. This analysis will also make use of the concepts of POS and social capital. The article analyses Somali associations' developmental trajectories over time in two different settlement-country con…
CZYM JEST ASZ-SZABAB? ZARYS ATAKU NA GALERIĘ HANDLOWĄ WESTGATE
2017
: We wrześniu 2013 roku światem wstrząsnęła informacja o krwawym zamachu w Nairobi. Mimo zaangażowania mediów w relacjonowanie całego zajścia samo zjawisko organizacji Asz-Szabab nie zostało wyczerpująco wyjaśnione. Autorzy artykułu podjęli więc próbę ukazania złożoności i stopnia skomplikowania całego zagadnienia.
