Milk production and physiological traits of ewes and goats housed indoor or grazing at different daily timing in summer
2009
During a 6 week trial in summer, 3 homogeneous groups, each consisting of 5 Comisana ewes and 5 Rossa Mediterranea goats, grazed watered forage resources during day (D) or night (N), or were housed indoor and supplied with mowed herbage (H). Maximum THI peaked at 94 at the end of July, and was almost constantly higher of 80. Milk yield was higher in N than in D and H goats, whereas N ewes produced more milk than H group, but their milk yield was higher than D ewes only in the period with the highest THI values. The lower urea in N goat milk, and the higher casein in N ewe milk, seem to indicate a better efficiency in dietary nitrogen utilization of night grazing animals. N ewes showed lower…
Effects of tumor mutation burden on the antigen presentation pathway
2021
AbstractTumor mutation burden (TMB) is used to select patients to receive immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) but has mixed predictive capabilities. We hypothesized that inactivation of antigen presenting genes (APGs) that result from increased TMBs would result in inherent resistance to ICIs. We observed that somatic mutations in APGs were associated with increasing TMBs across 9,418 tumor samples of 33 different histological subtypes. In adenocarcinomas of the lung, ITGAX and CD1B were some of the most commonly mutated APGs. In 62 patients with non-small cell lung cancers treated with a PD-1 inhibitor in second or later lines of therapy, there was an association of increased TMB with muta…
Tumor Biology and Natural History
2021
Tumors are not uniform diseases but heterogeneous entities consisting of cell populations called cell clones, with different genetic and molecular features. The ability of a tumor to evolve and fit to host microenvironment, by developing often resistance mechanisms to the anticancer therapies, is dependent on this biological variability. In fact, the variability observed within individual tumors, known as intra-tumor heterogeneity, represents the crucial step in cancer clonal evolution process, by promoting and driving a genetic mechanism able to select the fittest cell clones. A single clonal origin is usually shown by most of tumors at the early stages of the disease, whereas advanced-sta…
Restitutionserscheinungen an pflanzlichen Meristemen nach Röntgenbestrahlung

Young undifferentiated embryos ofEranthis hiemalis were treated with x-rays (1000–4000 r) and their further development was observed. In most of the 4000 r-group the division-activity is completely and irreversibly arrested, but the cell image remains unchanged. The embryos treated with doses between 1000 and 2000 r are also severely damaged, this time undergoing radical disorganization of the tissue, due to degeneration and necrosis. In these embryos small cell groups or even single cells are able to regain their mitotic potency. Meristematic centers (“embryoids”) arise and develop into normal or sometimes misformed viable adventive embryos. This restitution takes place only in x-rayed emb…

Don't change a winning horse

IntroductionThere is surprising excitement about the adequacy andfuture of the somatoform disorders (SFDs) as a circum-scribed diagnostic group [1–4]. Some authors wish to takethe forthcoming fifth revision of the Diagnostic andStatistical Manual (DSM) as a welcome occasion to removean unloved diagnostic term. However, eliminating the SFDswould devaluate the progress of research and clinicalpractice made during the past 25 years. It would lead toinsecurity and confusion in an interdisciplinary field whereclear terminology and common understanding is of highvalue. This contribution attempts to summarize some of themajor reasons why DSM-V should continue with the SFDs.Some suggestions will be…
Why DSM-III was right to introduce the concept of somatoform disorders.

Copyright 2005 The Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine. An interesting debate about the adequacy of the somatoform disorders as a diagnostic and clinical concept has begun. The debate is stimulated by the announcement of APA’s preparation of DSM-V, which is likely to follow DSM-IV as the world’s most influential classification system for defining the terminology and diagnostic definitions…
Citrus cybrid leaf essential oil
2000
The essential oil from the leaves of a Citrus cybrid plant, obtained by somatic hybridization between ‘Valencia’ sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck), embryogenic parent, and ‘Femminello’ lemon (C. limon L. Burm f.), leaf parent, has been studied by steam distillation and GC–MS analysis and compared with the correspondent oils from the parent plants. Although the overall composition of the cybrid essential oil appears much closer to that of ‘Femminello’, the relatively higher percentage of β-caryophyllene, as well as the qualitative and quantitative modifications of the esteric fraction, are characteristic of the new hybrid. Since cybrid cells possess the nuclear genome of the mesophyll…

Gastrointestinal cancers are a subset of molecularly heterogeneous diseases. In the era of personalised medicine, major efforts are being made towards stratifying patients according to molecular profiling. However, although most treatments are currently based on targeted therapy in relation to specific genomic alterations, acquired resistance emerges during anticancer therapies and subsequently treatment failure occurs. Intratumour heterogeneity plays a significant role in the acquisition of resistance by clonal evolution of tumour cell populations under therapeutic pressure. Despite a single tumour biopsy represents the standard for cancer research and drives our therapeutic decisions, lim…
The dexamethasone suppression test in depressed patients: Clinical and biochemical aspects
1983
Summary Endogenous depression (ED) is regarded as a psychiatric disease with a biological pathogenesis. Consequently patients with ED respond favourably to somatic treatment, whereas for non-endogenously depressed patients drug-treatment would be often inappropriate. Until now, psychopathologists have failed to define precisely the endogenous subtype of depression on clinical features alone. It is well established that a subgroup of depressed patients shows hypersecretion of Cortisol and consequently inadequate suppression of Cortisol after a test dose of dexamethasone. This dexamethasone suppression test (DST) was introduced as a laboratory marker, specifically identifying endogenously dep…
