Carbohydrate Metabolism and Source-Sink Relationships in Peach
2011
A growing plant can be viewed as a collection of carbohydrate sinks competing with each other for the available photosynthate supplied by the exporting leaves. Differences in sink strength often result in changes in the ability of various organs to compete for the available food determining final tree growth. A series of experiments have been conducted in peach to study changes and regulation of carbohydrate metabolism in growing organs and get a better understanding of the link between carbohydrate metabolism, sink strength, carbon partitioning and overall tree growth. Along with sucrose, sorbitol represents the major photosynthetic product and the main form of translocated carbon in peach…
A fast Fourier transform based direct solver for the Helmholtz problem
2018
This article is devoted to the efficient numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation in a two‐ or three‐dimensional (2D or 3D) rectangular domain with an absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The Helmholtz problem is discretized by standard bilinear and trilinear finite elements on an orthogonal mesh yielding a separable system of linear equations. The main key to high performance is to employ the fast Fourier transform (FFT) within a fast direct solver to solve the large separable systems. The computational complexity of the proposed FFT‐based direct solver is O(N log N) operations. Numerical results for both 2D and 3D problems are presented confirming the efficiency of the method discussed…
Influence of low methoxyl pectin gel textures and in vitro release of rutin from calcium pectinate beads.
2013
This study described the preparation and characterization of low methoxyl pectin (LMP) gels and beads for controlled release applications. The rheological characterization of the various formulations was proposed. Then the mechanical and morphological characterizations of beads were determined. Finally, the controlled release studies taking rutin as a model drug was evaluated. The results showed that Young's modulus values of non-amidated LMP gels decrease when adding up to 15% sorbitol. Calcium pectinate beads loaded with rutin are about 600 μm, oblong shaped with dense matrix. Beads containing sodium bicarbonate showed about 80% lower rutin encapsulation efficiency by increasing the pH of…

Non-Hemodynamic Effects of Organic Nitrates and the Distinctive Characteristics of Pentaerithrityl Tetranitrate
2009
Organic nitrates are among the oldest and yet most commonly employed drugs in the long-term therapy of coronary artery disease and congestive heart failure. While they have long been used in clinical practice, our understanding of their mechanism of action and side effects remains incomplete. For instance, recent findings provide evidence of previously unanticipated, non-hemodynamic properties that include potentially beneficial mechanisms (such as the induction of a protective phenotype that mimics ischemic preconditioning), but also toxic effects (such as endothelial and autonomic dysfunction, rebound angina, tolerance). To date, the most commonly employed organic nitrates are isosorbide …
Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure in the Elderly
1998
Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a complex clinical syndrome which constitutes the epilogue of the natural history of virtually all heart diseases and in its advanced stages, has a poor prognosis. In the elderly, heart failure exhibits particular characteristics linked to the age-related alterations of cardiovascular system, to the association with other pathologies, to the atypical clinical presentation and to the increased iatrogenic risk. Heart failure now afflicts over 1% of the general population with nearly 1 in 10 elderly subjects affected, and the frequency of CHF is progressively increasing in most industrialized societies1,2. Further, CHF remains a significant cause of death and …
