2021

Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) The study's main objective is to elucidate the reasons behind gender equality in the STEM education in the Algerian universities despite the lack of gender equity noticed in society. This study starts from Stoet and Geary’s findings in regard to the gender equality paradox in STEM, which considers that Algerian women are forced to choose to pursue STEM field studies in university in a look for better economic prospects. However, through a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology that includes 51 surveys and five semi-structured interviews, the study shows that Algerian women take into consideration other elements when choosing…

Labor Integration in Rural Norway : What are the main barriers to refugees accessing employment in small Norwegian municipalities?

2020

Master's thesis in Global Development and Planning (UT505) Recent figures of people seeking refuge have been unprecedented in history. As the number of refugees has increased, so have the debates about their integration in the host countries, particularly their integration into host countries’ labor markets. Despite ample research in the field of labor integration of refugees, the need for further research, especially in rural contexts, has been evident in the literature. Therefore, in the form of a master’s thesis, this qualitative study was conducted to investigate the main barriers to refugees’ labor integration in rural Norway, specifically in a small-sized remote municipality in Southe…

2017

Master's thesis Global development and planning UT505 - University of Agder 2017 Violent conflicts, particularly farmer-herder conflicts have, for a long time, been a common feature of economic livelihood in West Africa (Bleach, 2004). This thesis explores the causes and the effects of farmer-Fulani herdsmen conflict, and the mitigation responses towards the conflict. The resource scarcity, eco-survivalism and social capital theories (Hommer-Dixon, 1999; Okoli, 2013; Bourdieu, 1986) serve as the main theoretical point of discussion for this study. Using Agogo in Ghana as a case study, the study empirically examines the reasons behind the movement of the Fulani herdsmen to Agogo, the causes …

Rethinking spaces for participation in urban planning and development : A case study of the Bus Way process in Nord-Jæren

2019
