Influence of the metallurgy and the microstructure on the strength of titanium-steel laser welded assemblies
2021
The dissimilar laser welding of titanium alloys with stainless steel is of high interest for different industrial applications. However, the joining of these materials by direct fusion is hardly achievable because of the presence of brittle intermetallic phases in the Ti-Fe system that produce spontaneous cracking of the welds. The scientific aim of this thesis is to identify a reliable criterion that allows identifying the possible conditions allowing obtaining a durable dissimilar titanium/steel joints, in terms of mechanical strength in service conditions. The determination of this criterion is necessary for the comprehension of the relation between the microstructure of the melted zone …
Study of drilling and welding laser : dynamics of keyhole
2011
The aim of the present work is to study experimentally the formation of the capillary during the drilling and welding by laser beam and to develop the numerical simulation which allows following the dynamics and the evolution of the keyhole. The zinc was chosen as a test material because its thermodynamical properties are well known. To simplify the problem, in the first place the drilling mechanism was studied. Two experimental methods were used to characterize the evolution of the keyhole: the Direct Observation of Drilled Hole method, which allows the visualization of the keyhole after the application of laser pulses of different durations, and Zn-Quartz method, which allows the direct o…
Numerical simulation of heat transfer, fluid flow and elements diffusion during laser welding of dissimilar steels
2017
The design of new steel grades offering equivalent mechanical performances for lower thicknesses and the added value with the possibility to join two different steel grades, require development and control of joining processes. Thanks to high precision and good flexibility, the laser welding became one of the most used processes for joining of dissimilar welded blanks. The prediction of local chemical composition in the weld formed between dissimilar steels in function of the welding parameters is essential because the dilution rate and the distribution of alloying elements in the melted zone determine the final tensile strength of the weld. The goal of the present study is to create and to…
