Eclecticismo, Écart y alteridad: Symphony V American, de Leonardo Balada, como paradigma compositivo
2021
Eclecticism is a complex creative trend born as a consequence of both postmodernism and the heterodox treatment of cultural identity borders. This aesthetic path emerges as a compositional model of great communicative power in contemporary creation in the last two decades. Our essay addresses the Symphony V "American" (2003) by Leonardo Balada (1933) as a compositional paradigm. Through this article we demonstrate the importance of including popular sounds and re-signifying materials in the creative conception. A valid model of communication ahead of the challenges of globalization and mass media processes is therefore established hereby.
Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction, Centrifugation and Ultrafiltration: Multistage Process for Polyphenol Recovery from Purple Sweet Potatoes
2016
This work provides an evaluation of an ultrasound-assisted, combined extraction, centrifugation and ultrafiltration process for the optimal recovery of polyphenols. A purple sweet potato (PSP) extract has been obtained using ultrasonic circulating extraction equipment at a power of 840 W, a frequency of 59 kHz and using water as solvent. Extract ultrafiltration, using polyethersulfone (PES), was carried out for the recovery of polyphenol, protein and anthocyanin. Pre-treatment, via the centrifugation of purple sweet potato extract at 2500 rpm over 6 min, led to better polyphenol recovery, with satisfactory protein removal (reused for future purposes), than PSP extract filtration without cen…
Direct activation of zebrafish neurons by ultrasonic stimulation revealed by whole CNS calcium imaging
2020
Abstract Objective. Ultrasounds (US) use in neural engineering is so far mainly limited to ablation through high intensity focused ultrasound, but interesting preliminary results show that low intensity low frequency ultrasound could be used instead to modulate neural activity. However, the extent of this modulatory ability of US is still unclear, as in in vivo studies it is hard to disentangle the contribution to neural responses of direct activation of the neuron by US stimulation and indirect activation due either to sensory response to mechanical stimulation associated to US, or to propagation of activity from neighboring areas. Here, we aim to show how to separate the three effects and…
Effectiveness of passive ultrasonic irrigation in improving elimination of smear layer and opening dentinal tubules
2014
Objective: To compare the ability to eliminate debris and open dentinal tubules of different ultrasound irrigation procedures. Study Design: Forty extracted single-rooted human teeth were instrumented with mechanical rotatory instrumentation, and divided into four groups: (n=10) according to the final irrigation technique: group A (control), 2.5% NaOCl irrigation with the Miraject needle and no ultrasonic agitation; group B, passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI) with 2.5% NaOCl and Irrisafe 20 tips; group C, PUI with 2.5% NaOCl and Irrisafe 25 tips; group D, PUI with 2.5% NaOCl and K 25 tips. The amount of debris and the number of opened dentinal tubules was established by scanning electronic…
Geophysical surveys for the restoration of Branciforte Palace in Palermo
2019
A multi-methodological and non-invasive geophysical study has been carried out in order to support the restoration project of the historic Branciforte Palace in Palermo. Ground Penetrating Radar profiles and an Electrical Resistivity Tomography ERT, carried out on the floor of the stable of the Palace, allowed to evaluate in detail the state of consolidation of the subsoil, in correspondence of a double row of marble columns, some of which were affected by differential subsidence. These columns have been investigated by means of Ultrasonic Tomography to verify their state of degradation. Moreover Infrared Thermography images of the internal and external walls and of the vaults highlighted d…
Trans-Abdominal Ultrasound Guided ERC in a Pregnant Woman With Bile Duct Stones
2014
Background: The change in lithogenicity of bile, increased stasis of bile and decreased gall bladder emptying are the possible reasons for an increased risk of gall stones during pregnancy. However, biliary interventions during pregnancy are associated with risks to both the pregnancy and developing fetus. ERC under fluoroscopic control as gold standard is associated with higher risk of premature labor and teratogenity. Methods and patient: We performed transabdominal ultra-sound guided ERC in one patient in the second trimenon with gall stones. While the hilus area is observed by ultrasound, the papilla is carefully cannulated with a guidewire. A contrast agent is applied in the common bil…
New Insights into the Anterior Complex
2020
Objective: To introduce visualization of the germinal matrix (GM), external angle of the frontal horn, and periventricular white matter while evaluating the anterior complex (AC) during basic ultrasound assessment of the fetal brain. Case Presentations: This is a retrospective observational study of healthy women with singleton pregnancies, with no increased risk of fetal central nervous system anomalies, attending routine ultrasound screening at 20–32 weeks’ gestation. Seventeen cases are presented in which an abnormal aspect of the GM or external angle of the frontal horn or periventricular white matter on AC eval…
IL TRATTAMENTO PERCUTANEO ENDOVASCOLARE DEL VARICOCELE MASCHILE: C'E' ANCORA SPAZIO PER L'INNOVAZIONE?
A versatile ultrasound system for in vitro experiments
2015
Objective One of the most difficult tasks to achieve with the available instrumentations used to study the interaction between ultrasound (US) and cellular model systems is to design an experiment, where only the effects of one physical parameter at a time is evaluated, while all the others are kept constant. The set-ups are usually custom-made, often by means of clinical instrument intended for a different therapeutic purpose. Furthermore, the results are not strictly comparable with others obtained with techniques considered standard in molecular and cellular biology at this time, because there is the need to use non-standard devices to contain biological samples. Sterility, as well as te…
