Visually induced motion sickness and presence in videogames: The role of sound

Visually induced motion sickness (VIMS) is a well-known phenomenon in virtual environments, simulators, and videogames. We conducted an experiment to analyze the role of sound on the severity of VIMS and the feeling of presence in videogames. Thirty-two subjects first watched a pre-recorded sequence of the game “Mirrors Edge” and then played the game actively. Game-play sound was activated for half of the participants. VIMS was measured via the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and the Fast Motion Sickness Scale, presence was captured using the Presence Questionnaire. Acoustic spectroscopy of aerogel precursors

We investigate the acoustical properties of silica gels, which are precursors in the aerogel production process. These gels exhibit a strong “ringing gel” behavior, that is they emit a characteristic sound if one knocks against the container. We study this sound emission with a very simple spectroscopic technique and observe resonances which are characteristic for natural frequencies of a cylindrical body. From a fit of the experimental frequency positions to calculated values, we determine a sound velocity of c T = 4 m/s for a gel sample with porosity φ = 97.5%. Acoustic detection of neutrinos in bedrock

We propose to utilize bedrock as a medium for acoustic detection of particle showers following interactions of ultra-high energy neutrinos. With the density of rock three-times larger and the speed of sound four-times larger compared to water, the amplitude of the generated bipolar pressure pulse in rock should be larger by an order of magnitude. Our preliminary simulations confirm that prediction. Higher density of rock also guarantees higher interaction rate for neutrinos. A noticeably longer attenuation length in rock reduces signal dissipation. The Pyh\"asalmi mine has a unique infrastructure and rock conditions to test this idea and, if successful, extend it to a full-size experiment.

Previous studies consistently showed that human listeners primarily consider the beginning of a time-varying sound when judging its overall loudness, and place less weight on subsequent temporal portions. However, all experiments studying this primacy effect in temporal loudness weights presented the target sound in quiet. Here, we compared temporal weights when the target sound was either presented in quiet or in a continuous background noise, and for a variation in the level of the target sound across a range of 60 dB. In the last years, deep learning methods have established themselves as the state-of-the-art approach for the task, using binary indicators during training to denote whether an event is active or inactive.
