A key role for abdominal ultrasound examination in "difficult" diagnoses of celiac disease.

2010

Purpose To evaluate the usefulness of abdominal ultrasound examination (US) for the diagnostic workup of cases of suspected CD involving negative serum antibodies and difficult diagnosis. Materials and methods 524 consecutive patients with symptoms of suspected CD underwent an extensive diagnostic workup. 76 (14 %) were excluded since they were positive for serum anti-tTG and/or EmA antibodies. 377 were excluded since they were diagnosed with something other than CD or did not have the alleles encoding for HLA DQ 2 or DQ 8. A diagnosis of CD with negative serum antibodies was probable in 71 patients who underwent abdominal US and duodenal biopsy for histology evaluation. Results Intestinal …

Synchronous parenchymal renal tumors of different histology in the same kidney

2009

Background: Synchronous primary cortical tumors of different histology in the same kidney are rare. Preoperative awareness of this coexistence is important, since it can help in planning the surgical approach. Purpose: To describe the imaging findings observed in five patients with two parenchymal malignant tumors of different histology in the same kidney. Material and Methods: We reviewed the pathology reports of 381 patients operated for renal tumors from January 2000 to March 2007. The medical records of all patients with multiple, synchronous, primary lesions of different histology in the same kidney were reviewed with special attention to imaging findings and indications on the nature…

Focal nodular hyperplasia in normal and fatty liver: a qualitative and quantitative evaluation with contrast-enhanced ultrasound

2004

The aim of this study was to describe gray-scale appearance of liver parenchyma and focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) by pulse inversion (PI) ultrasound (US) at baseline and after contrast agent administration in patients with normal and fatty liver. Sixteen consecutive patients (12 women, 4 men) with 29 previously diagnosed FNHs (15 of 29 located in normal liver and 14 of 29 in fatty liver) underwent PI US before and after SH U 508A (Levovist) injection. Signal intensity values were measured within the FNHs and the adjacent liver parenchyma in selected images. Baseline echogenicity of fatty liver was higher (15.19 +/- 2.90 dB +/- SD) than normal liver (10.91 +/- 3.15 dB +/- SD; p<0.001). Aft…

Magnetic resonance imaging of the pituitary gland in patients with secondary hypogonadism due to transfusional hemochromatosis

1999

To identify pituitary iron overload in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis causing secondary hypogonadism, we prospectively evaluated signal intensity abnormalities of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland of 18 patients affected by transfusion-dependent thalassemia major and secondary hypogonadism. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is useful to assess pituitary iron overload in patients with transfusional hemochromatosis and secondary hypogonadism by detection of a significant decreased signal intensity of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland on GRE T2*-weighted images. The decreased signal intensity of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland on GRE T2*-weighted images was co…

Ultrasound detection of abdominal lymphadenomegaly in subjects with hepatitis C virus infection and persistently normal transaminases: a predictive i…

1998

The indications for liver biopsy in anti-HCV-positive patients with persistently normal alanine aminotransferase levels are not clearly established. Recent studies have correlated the presence of abdominal lymphoadenomegaly with disease severity in patients with chronic hepatitis C. Our study aimed to evaluate the frequency of abdominal lymphoadenomegaly in an anti-HCV positive blood donor population with persistently normal alanine aminotransferase and the relationship of abdominal lymphoadenomegaly with the severity of liver changes.Eighty-six anti-HCV positive blood donors (58 M, 28 F) with normal alanine aminotransferase were followed up for a median of 31 months (range 12-50). To evalu…

Characterization of benign hepatic tumors arising in fatty liver with SonoVue and pulse inversion US.

2007

Background: We describe the spectrum of contrast-enhancement patterns of benign hepatic tumors arising in fatty liver on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US). Methods: Sixteen patients (12 women and four men) with 27 benign hepatic tumors (17 hemangiomas, eight focal nodular hyperplasias, and two hepatocellular adenomas) arising in fatty liver underwent baseline and pulse inversion US after administration of SonoVue. Two experienced radiologists evaluated baseline echogenicity and dynamic enhancement pattern of each lesion in comparison with adjacent liver parenchyma. Results: After administration of SonoVue, in the arterial phase 13 of 17 hemangiomas showed peripheral globular enhancement and…

Heterogeneous delayed enhancement of hepatic parenchyma after intravenous infusion of sonographic contrast agent: a new hypothesis

2007

Purpose. The aim of this paper was to report a heterogeneous latephase hepatic enhancement pattern observed after administration of a sonographic contrast agent and to present an aetiological hypothesis for the phenomenon. Materials and methods. A total of 1,729 (1,012 women and 717 men; age range 28–82; mean age 51) patients underwent contrastenhanced sonography of the liver. The examination was performed with a low mechanical index (MI <0.09) after injection of sulphur-hexafluoride-filled microbubbles, using different fonographic equipment and different contrast-specific algorithms. Results. Heterogeneous delayed liver enhancement was observed in six patients in the late phase (180 s), wi…

A Cohort Study of Childhood Cancer Incidence after Postnatal Diagnostic X-Ray Exposure

2009

Ionizing radiation is an established cause of cancer, yet little is known about the health effects of doses from diagnostic examinations in children. The risk of childhood cancer was studied in a cohort of 92.957 children who had been examined with diagnostic X rays in a large German hospital during 1976-2003. Radiation doses were reconstructed using the individual dose area product and other exposure parameters, together with conversion coefficients developed specifically for the medical devices and standards used at the radiology department. Newly diagnosed cancers occurring between 1980 and 2006 were determined through record linkage to the German Childhood Cancer Registry. The median ra…

Case report: acute portal vein thrombosis associated with acute cytomegalovirus infection in an immunocompetent adult

2017

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is usually asymptomatic and self-limiting in healthy individuals, but significant complications can develop in immunosuppressed patients. Venous or arterial thromboembolic phenomena are uncommon yet very serious complications of CMV infection. Most published reports describe immunosuppressed patients, but thrombotic events in CMV-infected immunocompetent individuals may also occur. We describe the case of an immunocompetent young man with acute CMV hepatitis that was complicated with portal vein thrombosis (PVT). We also review the literature regarding the association between PVT and CMV in immunocompetent patients. Thromboembolism is an underestimated but si…

Predicted and actual fetal weight throughout the last trimester.

1997

The aim of our study was to obtain, in normal pregnancies, references values of predicted and actual fetal weight for both male and female fetuses and for fetuses born to nulliparous and multiparous women between weeks 28 and 41 of gestation. Predicted fetal weight curves represented calculations of weight in the third trimester based on weight data obtained during the second trimester. These curves were obtained from 134 ultrasonograms obtained between weeks 20 and 27. Actual fetal weight curves represented the values calculated from third trimester measurements and were based on 374 ultrasonograms obtained between weeks 28 and 41. For predicted fetal weight minor differences were found be…
