Strategic Master Plans

2013

The MEDIWAT Project (Sustainable management of environmental issues related to water stress in Mediterranean Islands) aims to provide innovative and sustainable technical, operational and managerial solutions for tackling problems caused by water resources-quality worsening and shortage in the Mediterranean insular context. The project brings together partners from six Mediterranean islands: Sicily, Cyprus, Corsica were considered large islands because of their area and hydrological behavior. Conversely Crete, Malta and Balearic Islands were considered small islands. A detailed analysis of current and future conditions relating to freshwater availability, quality and use has been carried ou…

EVALUATION OF DIFFUSE AND CONCENTRATED POLLUTION AT WATERSHED SCALE

2009

The study presents an integrated approach in order to analyse and quantify pollution dynamics at basin scale depending on concentrated and diffuse sources. More specifically, an integrated model for urban drainage system has been exploited in order to simulate the complex sewer network - wastewater treatment plant and receiving water body. Moreover, a quali-quantitative model has been developped in order to simulate the non-point sources pollutant (agricultural and zoo-technical) in term of water river discharges and nutrient, produced from the wash off of soils. Finally, different models have been coupled in order to reconstruct the whole pollutant load for the receiving water body and to …

Modelling hydrology and water quality in a Mediterranean catchment

2010

In this study the SWAT model has been used in order to analyse and quantify pollution dynamics at basin scale depending on concentrated and diffuse sources. Nowadays, the receiving water bodies quality safeguarding is of growing importance due to the promulgation of recent laws as well as the growing sensitivity regarding the environment issues by the scientific and practitioner committee. Recently the EU 2000/60 (Water Framework Directive) makes the analysis of receiving water bodies even more complex by integrating the pollution in urban areas in a framework of the pollution sources at catchment scale. and making necessary further integration of environmental impacts associated with disch…

Nutrient sources in a Mediterranean catchment and their improvement for water quality management

2010

Changes in land-use or management strategies may affect water outflow, sediment and nutrients loads. Thus, there is an increasing demand for quantitative information at the catchment scale that would help decision makers or planners to take appropriate decisions. The characterisation of water status, the description of pollution sources impact, the establishment of monitoring programs and the implementation of river basin management plans require an analysis of the current basin status and estimates of the relative significance of the different sources of pollution. Particularly, in this study the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT2000) model was considered since it is an integrated hydro…

Environmental assessment of 2030 electricity generation scenarios in Sicily: An integrated approach

2020

Abstract This paper deals with the environmental assessment of two electricity scenarios in Sicily, for 2030, characterized by a high exploitation of renewable energy sources in order to quantify the potential contribution of the local strategies in the achievement of the European climate policies and the potential improvement in the future electricity mix, compared to the current one (2014). In order to match these goals, authors integrate the Life Cycle Assessment with a scenario analysis. The future electricity mix scenarios, characterized by a share of renewables (57% for 2030-BS scenario and 51% for 2030-DS scenario) show a reduction of the greenhouse gases emissions per kWh of electri…

Life-Cycle Assessment Applied to Future Scenarios of Electricity Generation in Sicily

2018

Fighting global warming and increasing the energy security are some of the most relevant objectives of the European energy policy. Thus, defining potential low carbon pathways for the energy sector is of paramount importance in order to identify strategies with the lowest impact on climate. This paper presents an overview of environmental assessment of future electricity scenarios in Sicily (Italy), for 2020 and 2030, characterized by a high exploitation of renewable energy sources. Authors apply the Life Cycle Assessment methodology, according to the standard of the ISO 14040 series, in order to evaluate the environmental impacts of electricity generation in the future scenarios in compari…

Environmental effects of energy policy in sicily: The role of renewable energy

2007

The saving of primary energy from fossil fuels and the promotion of exploitation of renewable sources are two of the most relevant goals to be achieved in order to match the climate protection target fixed by the Kyoto Protocol in 1997. For Italy, the commitment is the reduction of the greenhouse emissions by 6.5% below 1990 levels over the commitment period 2008–2012. It requires the introduction of suitable political strategies and programmes aimed to establish a sustainable energy system together with the application of a set of actions either at national scale, either at regional one. This study presents the results of a survey in the context of the Regione Sicilia about the potential s…

Insulating Building Components Made from a Mixture of Waste and Vegetal Materials: Thermal Characterization of Nine New Products

2021

Nowadays, energy efficiency and sustainability are the fulcra of building policies. These policies promote the use of new technologies and materials that can reduce the primary energy involved and the environmental costs of construction, guarantying at the same time a high level of comfort for the building’s occupants. Synergy between previous construction techniques and the use of new materials should be pursued by employing materials with a low environmental impact and optimal thermal insulation properties. Within this framework, new materials derived from the agriculture sector, and waste or recycling products from the industrial/agricultural sectors have been studied. The aim of this pa…

A CCHP system fed by low enthalpy sources in Mediterranean area

2018

Climate change and energy consumption increasingly call for a better use of energy sources. Renewable sources are still growing in the power production of many countries, so leading to the reduction of CO2 emissions. Further restrictions will be applied to the use of fossil fuels with a lot of consequences; for example, major German cities such as Stuttgart, Dusseldorf and Hamburg are all contemplating bans related to diesel pollution, and on the other hand some of the biggest car producers - FCA, Toyota, etc. - are planning to stop the diesel engines production in a few years. At the same time, some restrictions are applied also to many refrigerating fluids, in order of firstly limiting th…
