Alternative energy scenarios for small islands: A case study from Salina Island (Aeolian Islands, Southern Italy)

2012

Abstract The Aeolian archipelago is made up of seven main islands situated in the Tyrrhenian sea (Sicily Italy). They represent a suitable scenario for the development of a sustainable energy production system, that could easily be reproduced on other Mediterranean Islands. The fact that these islands depend on the mainland for energy supplies and the high cost of bringing fuel in tanker boats are factors that should strongly encourage the use of renewable energy source technologies. Taking into account the European Commission guidelines, this paper sets out to evaluate potential energy production using photovoltaic and small scale wind power, in order to verify their contribution to overal…

Voluntary Agreements to Promote the Use of Reclaimed Water at Tordera River Basin

2015

The voluntary agreement to promote the use of reclaimed water is an economic policy instrument (EPI) which focuses on improving water management by using reclaimed water. Following a win-win strategy, this EPI was implemented in the Tordera river basin (Spain), an area with endemic water scarcity problems and high competition among users for water resources. The assessment of the EPI suggests that significant positive outcomes have achieved from an environmental and economic point of view. Thus, the demand of freshwater has decreased and the availability of water is guaranteed even during summer period allowing therefore for the maintenance of economic activities (agriculture and golf cours…

Consequences of the Digital Economy : Transformation of the Growth Concept

2018

The digital economy is transforming the traditional concepts of economic growth. The recent reversal trend in GDP growth of ICT leaders can be attributed to effective utilization of soft innovation resources in Finland and adherence to traditional resources in Singapore.Confronting a productivity decline in the digital economy, global information and communication technology (ICT) leaders are transforming business models into those with uncaptured GDP creation. This can be attributed tothe harnessing soft innovation resourcesagainst a productivity decline. This in turn activates a self-propagating function and induces supra-functionality beyond economic value corresponding to a shift in peop…

Changes in Drop Out Intentions: Implications of the Motivational Climate, Goal Orientations and Aspects of Self-Worth across a Youth Sport Season

2021

The main objective of this work was to study the motivational antecedents of the intention to drop out of youth sport from the postulates of the achievement goal theory (AGT), placing special emphasis on the motivational climate that coaches create in their teams. Specifically, we analyzed whether changes in the perception of the motivational climate between the beginning and the end of the season predicted changes in players’ goal orientations, whether these, in turn, predicted changes in self-esteem and contingent self-esteem, and finally, whether the latter predicted the intention to drop out. Participants in the study were 552 players (Mage = 11.23, SD = 1.14), who completed the questio…

Evaluating similarity measures for gaze patterns in the context of representational competence in physics education

2018

The competent handling of representations is required for understanding physics' concepts, developing problem-solving skills, and achieving scientific expertise. Using eye-tracking methodology, we present the contributions of this paper as follows: We first investigated the preferences of students with the different levels of knowledge; experts, intermediates, and novices, in representational competence in the domain of physics problem-solving. It reveals that experts more likely prefer to use vector than other representations. Besides, a similar tendency of table representation usage was observed in all groups. Also, diagram representation has been used less than others. Secondly, we evalu…

When professionals force managers to adopt a decoupling strategy

2015

Top managers in organizations usually adopt a “decoupling” strategy to regulate relations with the professionals whom they employ. The concept of decoupling worked out by Meyer and Rowan (1977) can be used to analyze senior management’s decision to avoid confrontations with professionals by accepting, more or less outright, differences between the institution’s norms and the practices of professionals. Operating in this way is no longer obvious, since managers increasingly interfere in the “business” of professionals. The latter still have resources for countering top management’s strategy of “conformity” with the requirements of institutional representatives ; but they have to put up a fig…

Designing knowledge construction in pre-service teachers’ collaborative planning talk

2022

In this paper, we report on a qualitative study of student teachers’ collaboration in planning and implementing a course that integrated physics and the Finnish language. Audio-recorded planning sessions and interviews were examined using qualitative content analysis, first, to discover what kind of space for knowledge construction student teachers designed for learners and, second, to identify the characteristics of their collaboration in developing a new cross-disciplinary pedagogical practice. The analysis revealed challenges in integrating meaning-making resources for knowledge construction; especially the role of language remained mostly invisible. This indicates a need to develop teac…

Environmental mitigation hierarchy and biodiversity offsets revisited through habitat connectivity modelling.

2020

International audience; Biodiversity loss is accelerating because of unceasing human activity and land clearing for development projects (urbanisation, transport infrastructure, mining and quarrying …). Environmental policy-makers and managers in different countries worldwide have proposed the mitigation hierarchy to ensure the goal of “no net loss (NNL) of biodiversity” and have included this principle in environmental impact assessment processes. However, spatial configuration is hardly ever taken into account in the mitigation hierarchy even though it would greatly benefit from recent developments in habitat connectivity modelling incorporating landscape graphs. Meanwhile, national, Euro…
