System dynamics models for decision making in product multiple lifecycles

2015

The main drivers for adopting product multiple lifecycles are to gain ecological and economic advantages. However, in most of the cases it is not straight forward to estimate the potential ecological and economic gain that may result from adopting product multiple lifecycles. Even though many researchers have concluded that product multiple lifecycles result in gain, there are examples which indicate that the gain is often marginal or even none in many cases. The purpose of this research is to develop system dynamics models that can assist decision makers in assessing and analysing the potential gain of product multiple lifecycles considering the dynamics of material scarcity. The foundatio…

Building future nuclear power fleets: The available uranium resources constraint

2013

Abstract According to almost all forward-looking studies, the world′s energy consumption will increase in the future decades, mostly because of the growing world population and the long-term development of emerging countries. The effort to contain global warming makes it hard to exclude nuclear energy from the global energy mix. The availability of natural uranium resources is a major constraint in terms of meeting this demand. In line with the scenarios floated by various international organisations and taking into consideration only current uranium-consuming light water reactors technologies with slow neutrons, 4 to 7 Mt of uranium could be consumed by 2050, namely, all identified or know…

Social Economy Managers: Between Values and Entrenchment

2004

Managers play a key role in Social Economy corporate governance and can determine the path that these companies will take. This article analyses the theoretical aspects underlying the central role of managers in Social Economy enterprises, the nature of these strategic human resources, particularly the variables that influence their behaviour, and their ability to shape paths or strategies that strengthen or undermine the Social Economy identity of these enterprises. Finally, taking a prescriptive approach, it examines the advantages and limitations of different options for management selection and control.

Monetary incentives, motivational orientation and affective commitment in contact centers. A multilevel mediation model

2020

Abstract High quality contact and customer relationships are key services for all types of firms. To achieve this high quality performance standard, companies need highly motivated and committed employees, and human resources managers are responsible for designing and implementing practices capable of satisfying both economic exchanges and social exchanges in employee-organization relationships. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationships between monetary incentive expectation and affective commitment, in addition to the mediating role of motivation orientation in this relationship, in contact center employees. In particular, based on the social exchange theory (Blau, 1964), the s…

A missing tool to achieve the UN 2030 agenda goal n.8 : a proposal for a regulatory framework at a federal level regarding worker

2020

Worldwide interest and support for worker cooperatives at all levels, from global to local are increasing. The 2030 UN Agenda, Goal 8 aims to promote “sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all”. Even so, worker cooperatives are still rare in the United States. Unfortunately, as there is no comprehensive regulatory framework for worker cooperatives in the USA or a minimum legislation covering their concept at a federal level, the study is conducted through the judicial interpretation of sections 1381 through 1388 in subchapter T to the Internal Revenue Code.  Nonetheless, a clear pattern and conclusions can be deducted out of…

The Simpson paradox of school grading in Italy

2009

Abstract Data from the 2003 OECD-PISA Survey for Italy reveal a striking difference in the relationship between students’ competence (as measured by PISA score in Mathematics) and school grades across regions: a competence level granting bare sufficiency in the North yields excellence grades in the South. This has spurred a lively debate on education policy in the country, based on the inference drawn from this evidence that grading practices are excessively different in the two areas. We show in this note that this inference overlooks a Simpson paradox hidden in the data. After a more careful analysis, the above inference is seen to be wrong. The crucial omitted variable is the school-leve…

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK FOR TEACHERS SELF- ASSESSMENT TO TEACH 21ST CENTURY SKILLS

2021

The context of educational reforms taking place in many countries gives special relevance, as the curriculum enters the 21st century skills or so-called transversal skills. It is necessary to ascertain how successful the teaching of these skills is already so that the school management together with teachers develop evidence-based or data-driven professional development solutions. The aim of the research is to create a theoretical framework and corresponding self-assessment tools, how the teacher can assess for himself to what extent he has succeeded in achieving the competence to teach students in the 21st century skills required to achieve the goals set by the school in the context of the…
