2018

Mobile technologies are an important part of our daily life and we carry them with us all the time. Mobile learning is already used a lot in informal and non-formal learning, but in the context of formal learning it is not much used, yet. In the area of formal learning at universities, there is a great need for pedagogic scenarios to encourage educatorsto use these new technologies. It is suggested that educators will need to move beyond the didactic approaches still frequently found in higher education. Social constructivist approaches have been advocated, along with the development of communities of practice to support educators. In addition, more emphasis on learners is required, to unde…

Contributions of Response Processes Analysis to the Validation of an Assessment of Higher Education Students’ Competence in Business and Economics

2017

Higher education domains such as Business and Economics (B&E) generally lack evidence that standardized tests of competency actually assess those aspects of knowledge and reasoning that constitute important targets for learning and instruction. The construction of such a validity argument benefits from a framework to guide the collection of relevant evidence regarding the interpretive meaning of tests results, especially with respect to instruction and learning in B&E. Response processes analysis provides much needed evidence within such a validity argument. The present paper illustrates application of such a framework and the use of response processes analysis for assessment in the B&E hig…

This paper addresses how general and specific competences are dealt with and fostered through the Online First Certificate Course and Tester, designed by the CAMILLE Research Group in Spain. The debate and research on the role of competences is an ongoing issue within the field of higher education. Moreover, the new framework of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) has made it more visible and has contributed towards designing and implementing new educational curricula based on a competence-based approach. Developing Moral Competence in Higher Education

2014

In the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), moral and ethical competence is nearly absent from curricula development criteria. The recovery and incorporation of moral competence is an essential reflection: by integrating the ethical or moral dimensions of knowledge with the intellectual and technical dimensions, higher education can more effectively respond to the needs of society. This chapter affirms that the concept of habit offers an innovative perspective on human behavior that can contribute towards a more complete understanding and development of the concept of competence, and specifically of “moral competence” for both the sciences and social sciences.

Universities' Reporting on SDGs: Using THE Impact Rankings to Model and Measure Their Contribution to Sustainability

2021

Higher education institutions (HEIs) have voiced growing concerns about sustainability issues since Agenda 2030 was approved, but this is not enough for societal stakeholders seeking and delivering innovation and excellence. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015 as a universal call to action, and pose a challenge for HEIs as for the efforts made to fulfill them and knowing how to assess their performance. However, the metric management system implemented by HEIs quickly led to rankings emerging, which compare HEIs to metrics not related to the sustainability dimensions of the 17 SDGs. The main aim of the paper is to assess the level of repo…

The Future We Want: a Learning Experience to Promote SDGs in Higher Education from the United Nations and University of Valencia

2021

This article shares the strategy for mainstreaming the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the University of Valencia (UV), which, although limited in its scale, may compel other Higher Education Institutions to think in technological and social progress aligned with the 2030 Agenda. It explicates a process driven by the UV, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the United Nations (UN), and in collaboration with the Service for Geospatial, Information, and Telecommunications Technologies from the UN Support Base in Valencia (Spain) to prepare the online event: “The United Nations We Want”. It was the culmination of a collaborative project between students and faculties from differe…

Business Cooperation - Improving The Working Life Relevance of Higher Education

2021

Education programmes should provide students with the skills for working life. This is important not only for students, but also for companies. Skills refers, in addition to competence in a specific area, to general competencies, working life practices in common use and, for example, knowledge of software used in the business world. It is even more important to take into account the needs of working life when teaching adult students, who often study alongside work with the aim of progressing in their careers. In spring 2019, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius conducted a survey targeting information and communication technology (ICT) companies in its local area. The results highlighted…

Linked(In)g sport management education with the sport industry: A preliminary study

2021

Social media are one of the most valuable management tools used by sport managers in the fulfilment of their daily tasks. However, the studies that share and analyse the impact of educational experiences that incorporate social media into sport management education for professional purposes are scarce to date. Thus, this study presents an educational innovation piloted in a sport management course where LinkedIn—the social media most associated with the professional sphere—is introduced through an experiential learning methodology, as a driver of students’ career development and as a tool to keep up to date and interact with the sport industry. To assess the learning outcomes, a new scale w…
