Dreamless Sleep, the Embodied Mind, and Consciousness
2017
One of the major debates in classical Indian philosophy concerned whether consciousness is present or absent in dreamless sleep. The philosophical schools of Advaita Vedānta and Yoga maintained that consciousness is present in dreamless sleep, whereas the Nyāya school maintained that it is absent. Consideration of this debate, especially the reasoning used by Advaita Vedānta to rebut the Nyāya view, calls into question the standard neuroscientific way of operationally defining consciousness as “that which disappears in dreamless sleep and reappears when we wake up or dream.” The Indian debate also offers new resources for contemporary philosophy of mind. At the same time, findings from cogn…
The musculature of the electric fish Eigenmannia virescens (South American green knife fish) characterized with cytochrome oxidase staining
1986
Using cytochrome C-oxidase staining, different types of somatic musculature were clearly distinguished in the gymnotoid fish Eigenmannia virescens. Except for a few thin fibres in the region of the horizontal septum, which stained faintly, no others in the trunk muscle stained. Strong staining appeared in the fibres of the anal fin muscles. According to the classification of fish musculature into white, intermediate and red, only the locomotory organ of this fish has red fibres, whereas the trunk muscles are white. The red muscles along the horizontal septum, found in all other fish which have been investigated in this respect, seem to be absent. This is noteworthy since the anal fin alone …
Possible association of sudden infant death with partial complement C4 deficiency revealed by post-mortem DNA typing of HLA class II and III genes
1989
Based on evidence of an increased rate of respiratory infections in sudden infant death (SID) infants as well as the observation of familial occurrence, we analysed in a retrospective study class II and class II genes of the major histocompatibility complex in 40 cases of SID by Southern blot analysis of DNA obtained post mortem from tissue samples. In 24 cases, the parents were interviewed and confirmatory human lymphocyte antigen (HLA) and DNA typing was carried out. Using HLA-DR beta and -DQ beta probes, no evidence of an abnormal HLA-DR frequency distribution in SID infants was detected (P = 0.97). Using DNA probes for the tandemly arranged complement C4 and steroid 21-hydroxylase genes…
In vivo assembly of chromatin on pBR322 sequences cloned into yeast plasmids
1989
Abstract In order to study the in vivo assembly of chromatin on prokaryotic DNA templates, we have transformed yeast cells with plasmids pAJ50 and pRB58, which contain pBR322 sequences. In both cases nucleosomes are assembled in vivo on pBR322 DNA, although the nucleosomes are not homogeneous in size. To explore whether there is any preference for nucleosome assembly along pBR322 sequences, we have used an indirect end labeling method. The results indicate that most nucleosomes are placed at random on pBR322, although the probability for histone octamers to interact with some short regions is somewhat reduced. These regions coincide with sequences in which the frequency distribution of nucl…
A long-snouted late Eifelian arthrodire from Aragon (Spain)
2021
Carolowilhelmina geognostica Carls, 1995 is a large arthrodire (Placodermi) from the Tortodus kockelianus Conodont Zone, late Eifelian, in the Eastern Iberian Cordillera in southern Aragon. The somewhat incomplete but articulated skull is preserved, showing a long tubular rostral plate, very small postnasal plates, low toothless inferognathals, and a small, slender and flat parasphenoid. Supraorbital and central sensory lines meet their antimeres at the midline of the skull, forming a straight double line. Lines along the ventral surface of the rostral plate probably belong to the suborbital branches of the infraorbital sensory lines. The combination of characters of Carolowilhelmina points…
Magnetostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of the Carnian/Norian boundary interval from the Pizzo Mondello section (Sicani Mountains, Sicily)
2001
The 146.5 m-thick Upper Triassic limestone section at Pizzo Mondello in the Sicani Mountains of western Sicily is characterized by high quality of exposure, accessibility, and stratigraphic continuity. Magnetostratigraphic results delineate 12 normal and reverse polarity magnetozones, labelled successively from the base upwards as PM1n, PM1r, PM6n, PM6r. The Carnian/Norian boundary, based on conodont biostratigraphy, falls somewhere in the PM3n to PM5n interval which corresponds to the E14n to E16n magnetozone interval in the Newark reference sequence of polarity reversals. Comparison of magnetobiostratigraphic data from the Newark basin, Pizzo Mondello and other Late Triassic marine sectio…
Cloning of cDNAs coding forCandida albicanscell surface proteins
1995
Two cDNA libraries were constructed from mRNAs obtained from yeast cells and germ-tubes of Candida albicans in lambda gt11. Immunoscreening with polyclonal antibodies raised against cell wall components allowed the detection of 29 positive clones. Two of these clones were selected for their specific reactivity with antisera either from yeast (clone 11Y) or germ-tubes (clone 24M). cDNA fragments were isolated by the digestion of lambda DNA with EcoRI. Southern blot analysis with these fragments as probes demonstrated homology with C. albicans DNA, and by Northern analysis two mRNAs transcripts were detected with sizes of approximately 1·5 kb for 11Y and 1·1 kb for 24M. Both transcripts were …
Impact of Manaus City on the Amazon Green Ocean atmosphere: Ozone production, precursor sensitivity and aerosol load
2010
As a contribution to the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia – Cooperative LBA Airborne Regional Experiment (LBA-CLAIRE-2001) field campaign in the heart of the Amazon Basin, we analyzed the temporal and spatial dynamics of the urban plume of Manaus City during the wet-to-dry season transition period in July 2001. During the flights, we performed vertical stacks of crosswind transects in the urban outflow downwind of Manaus City, measuring a comprehensive set of trace constituents including O3, NO, NO2, CO, VOC, CO2, and H2O. Aerosol loads were characterized by concentrations of total aerosol number (CN) and cloud condensation nuclei (CCN), and by light scattering proper…
Preliminary observation on use of nest boxes in protected areas of Southern Sicily
2011
In this short note we summarize the data self-made nesting in nest boxes in two areas of NATURA 2000 in southern Sicily. The models of nest boxes considered host species during the study the following period: Falco naumanni, Falco tinnunculus, Athene noctua, Strix aluco, Sturnus unicolor, Parus major, Certhia brachydactyla, Corvus monedula, Passer montanus.
