La colonizzazione del Sud-est ucraino: una questione etnica ucraino-russa nella lettura di Dmytro Bahalij

2022

The Ukrainian-Russian ethnic question in Southeastern Ukraine has gained critical importance during the war unleashed by Moscow against Ukraine in February 2022; in this paper I analyze the question of the Ukrainian-Cossack and Muscovy colonization of this very region. I focus on the work by the Ukrainian scholar Dmytro Bahalij (1857-1932), a former member of the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences. Bahalij emphasizes the key difference between the Ukrainian-Cossack popular colonization of the steppe region and the Moscow administration of these territories. The paper examines some of the main writings by Bahalij and reviews critical articles about his works.

Care facilities for Germans in Thailand and Poland: making old age care abroad legitimate

2019

This article looks at old age care facilities abroad that target people who live in Germany. Such facilities have been established in Southeast Asia (mainly Thailand) and in Eastern Europe (mainly Poland). Given that they challenge central guiding orientations for old age care in Germany, considerable criticisms are levelled at them, and their use is viewed with distinct scepticism. Nevertheless, some of these facilities succeed in sustaining considerable demand from Germany over quite a few years. In this article, we therefore ask what strategies and arguments they use to make them a legitimate option for people in Germany and to be established on the German market. Based on two case studi…

Critical factors influencing international sporting success of the Philippines : the athletes' perspective

2017

The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the recent declining performance of the Philippines in international sporting competitions by identifying and evaluating relevant factors that are critical to its international success through the perspective of the national elite athletes. An evaluation of the organizational effectiveness of the national sports governing bodies provides explanation to the poor performance of the country in major international competitions such as the Southeast Asian (SEA)Games. One of the most recent approaches used in measuring organizational effectiveness is the Sport Policy factors Leading to International Sporting Success (SPLISS) model. Th…

Through the Gaze of Morbidity and Consumption

2019

The chapter theorizes the rise of dark tourism in Southeast destinations. This represents an unexplored segment for the specialized literature that devotes its efforts in studying Western study cases. There were two important findings. Firstly, and most importantly, dark tourism gives an ideological explanation to the Cold War that sometimes singles out the history of colonialism, the rise of the US as a superpower, and the interests of the Soviet Union. Essentially in consonance with Tzanelli, Sather Wagstaff, and Guidotti Hernandez, the authors hold the thesis that the heritage of dark tourism serves an ideological instrument of power, which is orchestrated by a ruling elite to promote a …

On the generation and degradation of emerged coral reef terrace sequences: First cosmogenic 36Cl analysis at Cape Laundi, Sumba Island (Indonesia)

2021

(IF 4.45: Q1); International audience; The emerged coral reef terrace sequence at Cape Laundi, on the north coast of Sumba Island (Indonesia), with at least 18 successive strandlines, remains poorly dated in spite of numerous previous data. The age discrepancies within these coral reef terraces (CRTs) were previously explained by their polycyclic nature, triggered by marine erosion and reoccupation of old coral colonies by new ones. This study aims at highlighting these processes, as well as the continental denudation that participates in the partial stripping of the thin superficial coral reef layer overlying the pre-existing surface, exhuming older coral colonies. For this purpose, we use…

Inflectional speaker-role classifiers in Weining Ahmao

2008

Abstract This paper is the first of two (see references) aiming to bring to the attention of pragmaticians an idiosyncratic classifier system that encodes speaker-roles along the lines of gender and age. Isolating (analytic) languages are known for their scarcity of word forms and for their under-specification of grammatical categories. Analytic languages in East and Southeast Asian involve classifiers – a word category without counterpart in most languages of the inflectional type – to attenuate some of the vagueness in the nominal realm. Similar to other parts of speech, the classifier generally constitutes a one-form word category with occasional sandhi-derivations. Weining Ahmao, a Miao…

DIURNAL RAINFALL VARIATION IN MALAYA1

1968

ABSTRACT In low latitudes, where seasonal differences of climate are small and usually limited to factors such as winds and precipitation, the weather is largely controlled by diurnal processes. The diurnal variation of rainfall is the most important result of these processes and it is a characteristic part of the climate. In Malaya, diurnal rainfall regimes show seasonal variations, which are closely related to the system of the southeast Asian monsoons. The seasonal variations differ according to location, and three regional types can be recognized, which are found, respectively, at the west coast, the east coast, and at inland stations. Singapore, because of its extreme location at the s…

Horizontal and elevational phylogeographic patterns of Himalayan and Southeast Asian forest passerines (Aves: Passeriformes)

2011

Aim  Zoogeographic patterns in the Himalayas and their neighbouring Southeast Asian mountain ranges include elevational parapatry and ecological segregation, particularly among passerine bird species. We estimate timings of lineage splits among close relatives from the north Palaearctic, the Sino-Himalayan mountain forests and from adjacent Southeast Asia. We also compare phylogeographic affinities and timing of radiation among members of avian communities from different elevational belts. Location  East Asia. Methods  We reconstructed molecular phylogenies based on a mitochondrial marker (cytochrome b) and multilocus data sets for seven passerine groups: Aegithalidae, Certhiidae (Certhia),…

The Effects of Taxation on Migration: Some Evidence for the ASEAN and APEC Economies

2010

This paper investigates the effects of taxation on migration. It develops a stylized, two-country model to examine the impact of taxes on labor mobility. The theoretical predictions that taxes affect migration decisions and that educated workers are more responsive to taxation are supported by some empirical evidence for the economies of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. The empirical application also shows that average tax rates have a larger impact on migration choices than marginal rates. Average tax rates are most important for migrants with secondary education, while marginal rates have a greater influence on the decisions of migrants…
