Habitat preferences of bats in a rural area of Sicily determined by acoustic surveys
2009
<strong>Abstract</strong> The bat fauna of a 60 km2 wide area representing the typical rural landscape of inland Sicily and including the small &ldquo;Rocche di Entella&rdquo; karstic plateau (Natural Reserve and SAC) was surveyed between May 2006 and September 2007. Sampling was carried out at 95 sites, distributed proportionally in six main habitats. Bat calls were time-expanded with a D980 bat detector and then identified to species level by a Discriminant Function Analysis. We recorded 305 bat passes and identified 96.4% of recorded calls. Moon phase, cloud cover and their interaction did not affect total bat activity, nor did the sampling peri…
La deistituzionalizzazione nel Mezzogiorno. Lotte antistituzionali e rinnovamento psichiatrico a Palermo e Reggio Calabria tra anni sessanta e settan…
2021
The article explores the history of the process of deinstitutionalization in Palermo and Reggio Calabria, in the context of the critical psychiatric movements in Italy (1960-1978). It is consolidated the idea of a Southern Italy unconnected with the “psychiatric question” and anti-institutional practices, in Italy due mainly to Franco Basaglia and his team. The essay focuses on this issue in the South of Italy where, as well as in the other experiences, the actions were both political and scientific. The analysis considers also the connections of Palermo and Reggio Calabria movements, in particular with Democratic Psychiatry, and looks at the role played by social movements and political fo…
Architettura in alzato. Questioni di territorio, paesaggio, ambiente
2021
2017
Exploring the determinants of anti-mafia entrepreneurial behaviour: an empirical study on southern Italian SMEs
2017
This study analyses organized crime from an economic perspective and highlights the crucial role of extortion in mafia activities. From an economic viewpoint, we debate the conditions that lead companies to resist mafia extortion. To study the reactions of firms to extortion, we adopt an institutional perspective and consider the contribution of different theories in the socially responsible behaviour and organized crime literature, in an attempt to understand this complex entrepreneurial behaviour better. A sample of 116 southern Italian SMEs, whose entrepreneurs have publicly opposed mafia extortion, was selected. By adopting a matched-pair design, anti-mafia firms were subsequently match…
Introduzione, in [Meridiana : rivista di storia e scienze sociali : 92, 2, 2018].
2018
The period between the two World Wars marks the end of mass emigration for Italy. In the course of thirty years, the migratory flows were transformed: the number of starters was reduced and the trajectories changed. The new restrictions established by immigration countries – (e.g. the Quota Acts in the Twenties) – and the advent of the fascist regime redesigned the paths of Italian emigrants. At first, Mussolini gathered the legacy of liberal governments; then, since the end of the Twenties, he inaugurated a new migration policy, in line with the demographic policy of the regime and strengthening the link between emigration and foreign policy. As the historian Bertonha wrote, emigration bec…
Applying Hypothesis of Self-Similarity for Flow-Resistance Law in Calabrian Gravel-Bed Rivers
2018
In this paper, the results of an investigation carried out to test the applicability of a flow-resistance law on gravel-bed rivers in southern Italy (fiumare) are reported. First, dimensional analysis and self-similarity theory are applied for deducing the flow-resistance law (i.e., relationship among friction factor, mean velocity, shear stress, and physical properties) for gravel-bed rivers with a high boulder concentration. The proposed approach is calibrated and tested using two independent data sets (104 reaches of some Calabrian fiumare). Then, the incomplete self-similarity hypothesis is also applied to theoretically deduce the flow-velocity profile, which was integrated for obtainin…
The rodents of the Pirro Nord fauna (Foggia, Southern Italy)
2013
The rodent fauna of various fissure fillings of the Pirro Nord karstic complex are examined here. They have been collected during several field caingns starting from the 70’s until 2006 and are here examined in a comprehensive matter. Hundreds of specimens of arvicolids, murids and, in much lower amount, Glirids have been recovered from several of these fissures. They belong to the species Allophaiomys ex gr. ruffoi, Myodes sp. Apodemus flavicollis and Muscardinus sp.
“A Perfect Heroine in Foreign Travel.” Female Mobile Identities and Southern Italy in the 19th Century Non-feminist Periodical Press
2016
This essay focuses on the inteaction between the publication of female travel writing abouth the South Of Italy in non -feminist 19th century British periodicaldìs and the circulation of a transgressive model of femininity centred on the concepts of mobility, vitality and visibility. the choice of Southern Italy, and anti-tourist destination that since the era of the Grand Tour had been considered dangerous for men, let alone for women, magnifies female heroic attitudes and contaminates female conventional domestic purity enhancing the concept of an unfixed female identity. The publications of a travelogue, a mostly non fictional genre, on an innovative and reactive medium, was a manifest a…
Soil erosion susceptibility assessment and validation using a geostatistical multivariate approach: a test in southern Sicily
2008
A certain number of studies have been carried out in recent years that aim at developing and applying a model capable of assessing water erosion of soil. Some of these have tried to quantitatively evaluate the volumes of soil loss, while others have focused their efforts on the recognition of the areas most prone to water erosion processes. This article presents the results of a research whose objective was that of evaluating water erosion susceptibility in a Sicilian watershed: the Naro river basin. A geomorphological study was carried out to recognize the water erosion landforms and define a set of parameters expressing both the intensity of hydraulic forces and the resistance of rocks/so…
