X-Linked Dilated Cardiomyopathy.

We report on a family with a severe form of X-linked dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Two brothers, the elder requiring heart transplantation, and a maternal cousin presented elevated creatine kinase levels, increased right ventricular diameters and electrocardiographic abnormalities. All complained of exertional cramping myalgia, but none had muscle weakness or a pathological electromyogram. Muscle biopsies of these individuals revealed a mild myopathic picture with atrophic type I and hypertrophic type II fibers. Immunofluorescence using N- and C-terminal antibodies (dys-2, dys-3) against the dystrophin protein showed preserved, but reduced intensity of staining of the sarcolemmal membranes.…
Smouldering hepatitis B virus replication in patients with chronic liver disease and hepatitis delta virus superinfection

Hepatitis B virus deoxyribonucleic acid (HBV-DNA) was studied by Southern blot analysis in liver biopsy specimens from 75 HBsAg-positive patients with chronic liver disease living in southern Italy. Twenty-seven of the patients were hepatitis delta virus (HDV) superinfected. Intrahepatic HBV-DNA was detected in 54 (72%) patients, 32 (59%) of them with replicative forms. The presence of replicative forms was directly related to liver HBcAg and inversely related to liver HDAg, as shown by multivariate analysis. Finger ridge-count asymmetry and diversity in Andean Indians and interpopulation comparisons

A separate analysis of ulnar and radial finger ridge-counts, obtained from 115 Aymara Indians (55 males and 60 females) of northern Chile, was performed. From these variables, directional asymmetry, fluctuating asymmetry, indices of bilateral asymmetry (square root of A2), and intraindividual diversity (s/square root of 5) were calculated for each sex. The results show that most bimanual differences for the ridge-counts are not statistically significant in the Aymara, except for radial counts in female first and second fingers (right hand means are larger), while most ulnar-radial differences are highly significant in both sexes (radial values exceed ulnar ones). Hepatitis B vaccination failure has been linked to the presence of certain human leukocyte antigen class II alleles. However, the functional background of these associations has remained unclear. The use of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to detect the presence of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNA in oral mucosa in the absence of specific lesions gives rise to the problem of identifying the real viral replication sites. Complete functional C1q deficiency associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).

SUMMARY A complete functional deficiency of Clq is described in a patient suffering from SLE. From reduced plasma C1 activity of the parents a hereditary trait was assumed. The defective C1q molecule was haemolytically inactive, did not bind to immune complexes, and was not recognized by the monocyte C1q receptor. C1 activity in the patient's serum could be restored by the addition of purified C1q. Analysis by gelfiltration and ultracentrifugation experiments revealed an immunoreactive molecule of about 150 kD mol. wt, corresponding to one structural subunit of the C1q macromolccule, containing two A chain-B chain dimers and a C-C chain dimer.
