Newly Digitized Database Reveals the Lives and Families of Forced Migrants from Finnish Karelia

2017

Studies on displaced persons often suffer from a lack of data on the long-term effects of forced migration. A register created during 1960s and published as a book series ‘Siirtokarjalaisten tie’ in 1970 documented the lives of individuals who fled the southern Karelian district of Finland after its first and second occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940 and 1944. To realize the potential value of these data for scientific research, we have recently scanned the register using optical character recognition (OCR) software, and developed proprietary computer code to extract these data. Here we outline the steps involved in the digitization process, and present an overview of the Migration Kare…

Neuvostoliitto ja suomalainen soitonopetus : rajoja ja mahdollisuuksia

2021

Artikkelissa käsitellään suomalaisen instrumenttiopetuksen kehitystä. Fokuksessa on Neuvostoliiton vaikutus erityisesti pianon- ja viulunsoiton opetukseen ajanjaksona, jolloin suomalainen musiikkikoulutus kehittyi voimakkaasti, 1960-luvulta 1980-luvulle. This article discusses the development of teaching of musical instruments in Finland. The focus is fixed on the Soviet impact during the decades when Finnish music education was strongly developing, from the 1960s to 1980s. The focus is, in particular, the teaching of two instruments, the piano and the violin. Both received still noticeable influences from the top musicians and their methods in Soviet Union. Attention is paid both on struct…

The role of Finnish leftists in Soviet-Finnish artistic exchanges during the late socialist period

2020

The article examines artistic exchanges between the USSR and Finland from the viewpoint of the Finnish left. After WWII, Finland was in a difficult geopolitical position; although not occupied by the USSR, it received little support from the West and so remained an independent capitalist democracy, with little foreign leverage. The Soviet influence was felt in many areas, and throughout the Cold War, Finland received many more world-class Soviet artists than any other Western country. This was in part a consequence of Finland’s proximity to the USSR, but the Finnish Communist Party, a major domestic political force, also played a role. Immediately after the war, organizations associated wit…

Functions of adolescent drinking in Finland and the Soviet Union

1987

The present study was conducted in Finland and the USSR (Estonia) with two birth cohorts (14 and 17 years old) and their parents. The subjects, 504 in Finland and 329 in Estonia, were drawn from urban and rural areas. 85% of the Estonian and 55% of the Finnish parents returned the questionnaire. The results supported the hypothesis that adolescent drinking is an age-related behaviour aimed at active coping efforts to adopt adult-like behaviour. In both countries abstinence decreased with age, and the use of alcohol was seen as behaviour which became acceptable at an older age than the age when the actual initiation occurred. However, the use of alcohol remained occasional through the ages o…

Beetwen Berlin and Moscow: Polish Western Thought in the Twenty-Year Interwar Period

2020

The article was submitted on 27.02.2020. This article is not primarily focused on presenting arguments and views held by Polish political groups with reference to the territorial shape of the Polish state after the First World War. Instead, its aim is to draw attention to actions taken by these groups towards the defence of Polish western lands. One of the key problems of Poland’s foreign policy after 1918 was the question of relations with its neighbours, chiefly Germany and Russia (and the Soviet Union). For many years, the most serious problem faced by post-Versailles Europe was that of the Germans striving to revise the legal order, to break their political isolation, and return to the …

Post‐Soviet Reform in Latvia: Early Progress and Future Prospects

1992

After the rapid and dramatic demise of the Soviet Union in 1991, 15 newly autonomous republics are restructuring their economies after decades of central Communist planning. The three Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia had successful market‐oriented economies during more than two decades of independence between World Wars I and II and were comparatively strong performers within the USSR after being occupied in 1940. A case study of Latvia looks at the historic factors and political issues which are shaping the current reform process. A contrast of state‐run, collective and private enterprises is used to illustrate the rapid changes which now place Latvia at the forefront among p…
