The limits of visual mass perception

The theory of direct perception suggests that observers can accurately judge the mass of a box picked up by a lifter shown in a point-light display. However, accurate perceptual performance may be limited to specific circumstances. The purpose of the present study was to systematically examine the factors that determine perception of mass, including display type, lifting speed, response type, and lifter's strength. Purpose In this article, the authors examine the developmental continuity from prelinguistic communication to kindergarten age in language and working memory capacity. Method Following work outlining 6 groups of children with different trajectories of early communication development (ECD; Määttä, Laakso, Tolvanen, Ahonen, & Aro, 2012), the authors examined their later development by psychometric assessment. Benztropine (BZT) analogs, a family of high-affinity dopamine transporter ligands, are molecules that exhibit pharmacological and behavioral characteristics predictive of significant therapeutic potential in cocaine addiction. Here, we examined in mice the effects of 3 alpha-[bis(4'-fluorophenyl)metoxy]-tropane (AHN-1055) on motor activity, conditioned place preference (CPP) and c-Fos expression in the striatum. Influence of the contrast sensitivity function on the reaction time

The reaction time (RT) vs spatial frequency (SF) curve is determined, using gratings from 1 to 40 c/deg, at seven different contrast levels between 0.95 and 0.02. The form of the RT/SF function: (a) replicated the inverse of the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) at near threshold contrast levels; (b) behaved differently at higher contrasts, exhibiting two branches at contrast close to 1. In the present research we investigated whether the direction of the attentional bias in line bisection judgment displayed by healthy subjects is influenced by the evaluation of the social distance between self and other. We used inhibitory repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) trains over the right and left parietal cortex to investigate the role of these regions in the task. Linguistic and spatial skills predict early arithmetic development via counting sequence knowledge

Utilizing a longitudinal sample of Finnish children (ages 6-10), two studies examined how early linguistic (spoken vs. written) and spatial skills predict later development of arithmetic, and whether counting sequence knowledge mediates these associations. In Study 1 (N = 1,880), letter knowledge and spatial visualization, measured in kindergarten, predicted the level of arithmetic in first grade, and later growth through third grade. Study 2 (n = 378) further showed that these associations were mediated by counting sequence knowledge measured in first grade.
