Depassivation Experiments by Laser‐Pulse‐Induced Spallation

Depassivation experiments have been conducted by applying a technique developed for adhesion tests. A laser-pulse-induced spallation of the passive film is induced in situ without any contact between the laser beam and the passive film. The depassivation is controlled by the short pressures induced at the metal-film interface. The interfacial stresses at the metal-film interface could be studied by this technique

The Zr, Hf, Y and lanthanide (REE) distribution in biological tissues of Sabella spallanzanii and Styela plicata species collected from two harbours from the northern Sicily is studied for providing information regarding the Zr, Hf and REE uptake from the environment. Previous studies determined the fractionation of dissolved REE scavenged on binding sites onto biological surfaces. By comparing the recognised shale-normalised REE patterns of studied samples with evidence from reference data, the observed behaviour of these elements in biological tissues of Sabella spallanzanii and Styela plicata is interpreted to result from the preferential uptake of intermediate REE onto carboxylic sites.…

In the present paper, a simplified model is used to determine the axial load-carrying capacity of compressed short reinforced concrete columns subjected to corrosion processes. The model considers members with circular and square cross-sections and accounts for—cover spalling, —concrete core confinement induced by transverse steel reinforcement, —buckling of longitudinal reinforcing bars. Strength reduction in concrete cover and core due to cracking induced by rust formation, reduction of steel area in longitudinal bars and transverse stirrups due to general and pitting corrosion and loss of confinement pressure are considered. In the present paper, a simple model to determine the moment-axial force domain of the cross-section of reinforced concrete (R.C.) columns subjected to corrosion process is presented. An experimental investigation into the behavior of 16 short, confined, reinforced concrete columns with and without steel fibers was carried out. The columns with square sections had a concrete core 165 x 165 mm (6.49 x 6.49 in.) at the midsection and were hunched at the ends to apply eccentric loading and prevent boundary effects. The specimens were tested to failure at different strain rates under two loading schemes: concentric compression and eccentric compression with a constant eccentricity. Abstract In this paper, different methods of rare earth oxides deposition on the surface of AISI 304 steel are described: sol/gel, electrophoresis in aqueous or organic medium, OMCVD of rare earth β-diketonates. After the deposition, all the samples were reheated. This treatment was absolutely essential for a strengthening effect of the protective oxide scale. Oxidation of coated and non-coated samples was performed under isothermal and cyclic conditions. The effect of rare earth deposition is significant in isothermal conditions. A three-dimensional ion optical code IBSimu, which is being developed at the University of Jyväskylä, features positive and negative ion plasma extraction models and self-consistent space charge calculation. The code has been utilized for modeling the existing extraction system of the H(-) ion source of the Spallation Neutron Source. Simulation results are in good agreement with experimental data. A high-current extraction system with downstream electron dumping at intermediate energy has been designed. Several routes of yttrium introduction were applied to test the high temperature oxidation performance of a FeCrAl alloy. Isothermal oxidation tests were described in a previous paper (Part I of this paper in this journal, 2004, 55, 352). Cyclic oxidation tests were performed in air under atmospheric pressure on blank specimens, Y 2 O 3 sol-gel coated-, Y 2 O 3 metal-organic chemical vapor deposited (MOCVD)-, yttrium ion implanted-alloys, as well as on a steel containing 0.1 wt.% of yttrium as an alloying element.
