Abstract A pulsed laser technique, based on conventional laser acoustics testing, has been developed to define the spall resistance of sputtered oxide films on a metallic target. Direct irradiation of the coated side of the sample generates an acoustic source at the inner film–metal interface. A model of the laser-induced epicentral displacements at the opposite side that takes into account the confining effect of the coating has been proposed to evaluate the critical laser irradiance corresponding to progressive damages at the inner film–metal interface, i.e. interface delamination, film spallation and film expulsion, respectively. Compressive behavior of short fibrous reinforced concrete members with square cross-section

In the present paper a mechanical model to predict the compressive response of high strength short concrete columns with square cross-section confined by transverse steel is presented. The model allows one to estimate the equivalent confinement pressures exercised by transverse steel during the loading process taking into account of the interaction of the stirrups with the inner core both in the plane of the stirrups and in the space between two successive stirrups. Abstract A mechanical analysis of thin films of quasi-brittle materials used as thermal coatings for superalloy substrate is proposed. The study considers a bi-material element subjected to uniform tension formed by a thin layer of quasi-brittle material (typically a ceramic) bonded on an elastic substrate. The bounding between the coating film and the substrate is realized by a very thin primer which mechanically modeled as a zero thickness cohesive frictional interface. Trace metal concentrations were measured in different tissues of Sabella spallanzanii, Styela plicata and Mytilus galloprovincialis collected in Termini Imerese harbor, located in Sicily (Italy), in order to evaluate the potential use of these species as bioindicators. The higher bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were calculated in tube of Sabella spallanzanii, except for As which shows the higher BAF in branchial crown of the same specie. Regarding the other species analyzed, higher BAFs were found in the digestive gland of Mytilus galloprovincialis. Tensorial non-standard neutrino interactions are studied through a combined analysis of nuclear structure calculations and a sensitivity $\chi^2$-type of neutrino events expected to be measured at the COHERENT experiment, recently planned to operate at the Spallation Neutron Source (Oak Ridge). Potential sizeable predictions on transition neutrino magnetic moments and other electromagnetic parameters, such as neutrino milli-charges, are also addressed. Neutron capture cross section measurements for nuclear astrophyisics at CERN n_TOF

A series of neutron capture cross section measurements of interest to nuclear astrophysics have been recently performed at n_TOF, the neutron spallation source operating at CERN. The low repetition frequency of the proton beam driver, the extremely high instantaneous neutron flux, and the low background conditions in the experimental area are optimal for capture cross section measurements on low-mass or radioactive samples. Determining the nuclear neutron distribution from Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering: current results and future prospects

Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CEνNS), a process recently measured for the first time at ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source, is directly sensitive to the weak form factor of the nucleus. The European Spallation Source (ESS), presently under construction, will generate the most intense pulsed neutrino flux suitable for the detection of CEνNS. In this paper we quantify its potential to determine the root mean square radius of the point-neutron distribution, for a variety of target nuclei and a suite of detectors. Lead–gold eutectic: An alternative liquid target material candidate for high power spallation neutron sources

Abstract One of the main technical concerns of Megawatt-class spallation neutron sources is the removal of the heat deposited in the target station. A way to overcome it is to use targets consisting of flowing liquid metals, but the already tested materials – mercury and lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) – are not unproblematic. We show here that another eutectic alloy containing lead and gold (LGE) could be a suitable alternative. Besides a chemical toxicity lower than mercury, this low melting-point alloy has the advantage of being solid at RT. Quantitative analysis of rhenium in irradiated tungsten

Abstract Pure tungsten (W), irradiated to 3.5 dpa in a target of the Swiss neutron spallation source (SINQ), was characterized using high-sensitivity HPGe gamma ray spectroscopy to identify the present radionuclides. Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to quantify the amount of Re produced in the irradiated W. An atomic concentration of 0.61% Re in the irradiated W was determined from the height of the L3-edge X-ray absorption edge jump. Analysis of the local atomic structure from the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra indicates that rhenium (Re) produced in the system is mainly coordinated by W atoms and partly coordinated by void defects.
