Limits in medical care and social relief during the Spanish Civil War in a rear-guard city: the inclusa of the provincial hospital of Valencia.

2016

Due to its geostrategic condition during the Spanish Civil War, Valencia became one of the Republican cities welcoming more refugees, including many children. In this scenario of demographic and health crisis, the town had to restructure the assistance network in order to accommodate thousands of displaced children, who often had their relatives in faraway places. The paper focuses in the progressive rehabilitation undertaken by the Inclusa of Valencia, which was the provincial foundling hospital. This included deep changes both in its operation and in the admission criteria, particularly following the transfer of the Inclusa of Madrid to Valencia. The resulting overcrowding encouraged the …

2019

It's widely known, since long time ago, that the reign of Charles I began in the old kingdom of Valencia with the «Germanías»; a social conflict that finished by denerating into a civil war. In the following pages, we try to analyse the problems concerned with the finances of the army organized by the viceroy Diego Hurtado de Mendoza from the perspective of one of the institutions involved in the economic management of this army: the «Diputado del General».

The financial autonomy of the municipalities and the Valencian Parliament

2009

In the first half of the fourteenth century and on countless occasions, the Crown granted the leaders of the City of Valencia authorization to collect indirect taxes as a means of collecting the subsidies allocated to its military needs. The ratification of fiscal autonomy can be related to the Crown's interest in gaining control of municipal resources as a way of demanding donations in order to accomplish its policies. The main reason for the royal privilege to raise taxes in favour of the cities was the extensive expenses caused by the conquest of Corsica and Sardinia during the reign of James II. The Kingdom and the city of Valencia came to the aid of the monarch because they were intere…

The War on Terror

2019

9/11 has changed the world in many senses. It introduced not only fear in the contemporary society, but also ignited the counter-reaction to the US in what G. W Bush dubbed as “War on Terror”. This chapter centers on a philosophical discussion that relates the international geopolitics with the sociology of terrorism. Basically, the archetype of 9/11 has woken the interests of many scholars though, to date, it is ideologically inspired. Paradoxically, while much attention was paid on the archetype of 9/11 as a founding event that subordinated other similar events, less understanding of the issue scholars have. This chapter places the war on terror and 9/11 under the critical lens of scrutin…

La fobología, ¿ciencia o forma de entretenimiento?

2011

In last years, a wide range of manifestations linked to fear have been certainly become in a serious concern and challenge for citizenry worldwide. Ranging from the war on terror, outbreak of a new virus, natural or man-made disasters to the risk of a nuclear accidents we are now witness (in the inception of a new millennium) of a proliferation of fears and panic. A Brief Study of German Sinology Origins and the Dissemination of Daoism

2018

The dissemination of Daoism in the West is a process that, although it begins late and slow, will lead to the great interest that this way of thinking has finally awakened, not only in the academic field, but also in some popular media. In order to clarify the history of the Western study of Chinese doctrine, the present article reviews the contribution of what we call the German sinology until the mid-twentieth century to focus the contribution of the Germanic works. With the recognition that the first works in German language on the Daoism are due to the Austrian sinologist and Japanese scholar August Pfitzmaier, we review the history of sinology in Germany highlighting authors and summar…

‘Whose side are you on?’: negotiations between individual liberty and collective responsibility in Millar and McNiven’sMarvel Civil War

2015

The Civil War series by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven, published between July 2006 and January 2007, involves superheroes in a battle among themselves as an allegory for political conflicts of the United States, post-Patriot Act. Akin to Alan Moore’s Watchmen and the Uncanny X-Men series, Civil War centers on a political solution to regulate and control superhero vigilante justice. The rhetoric represented by the conflicting factions orbits the concerns of individual liberty vs. collective responsibility, with Captain America (a World War Two and Cold War warrior) siding most adamantly against government supervision and Iron Man fighting in favor of government control. The civil war played …
