Super-resolved or field of view enlarged imaging based upon spatial depolarization of light

2010

Abstract In this paper we present a new approach allowing the surpassing of the diffraction based limitation for the achievable resolution provided by imaging systems. It is based on an encoding–decoding process of various spatial pixels or regions in the field of view of the imaged object by orthogonal and differently time varying polarization states. The reconstruction of the original spatial information is obtained by applying a decoding process in a way similar to the encoding one. Although all the spatial information is summed and mixed together by the system, the decoding provides super-resolved imaging since in every spatial position the undesired spatial information having time vary…

Exploring Neighborhood Influences on Small-Area Variations in Intimate Partner Violence Risk: A Bayesian Random-Effects Modeling Approach

2014

This paper uses spatial data of cases of intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) to examine neighborhood-level influences on small-area variations in IPVAW risk in a police district of the city of Valencia (Spain). To analyze area variations in IPVAW risk and its association with neighborhood-level explanatory variables we use a Bayesian spatial random-effects modeling approach, as well as disease mapping methods to represent risk probabilities in each area. Analyses show that IPVAW cases are more likely in areas of high immigrant concentration, high public disorder and crime, and high physical disorder. Results also show a spatial component indicating remaining variability attribut…

Automated analysis of images for molecular quantification in immunohistochemistry.

2018

The quantification of the expression of different molecules is a key question in both basic and applied sciences. While protein quantification through molecular techniques leads to the loss of spatial information and resolution, immunohistochemistry is usually associated with time-consuming image analysis and human bias. In addition, the scarce automatic software analysis is often proprietary and expensive and relies on a fixed threshold binarization. Here we describe and share a set of macros ready for automated fluorescence analysis of large batches of fixed tissue samples using FIJI/ImageJ. The quantification of the molecules of interest are based on an automatic threshold analysis of im…

Advances in Kernel Machines for Image Classification and Biophysical Parameter Retrieval

2017

Remote sensing data analysis is knowing an unprecedented upswing fostered by the activities of the public and private sectors of geospatial and environmental data analysis. Modern imaging sensors offer the necessary spatial and spectral information to tackle a wide range problems through Earth Observation, such as land cover and use updating, urban dynamics, or vegetation and crop monitoring. In the upcoming years even richer information will be available: more sophisticated hyperspectral sensors with high spectral resolution, multispectral sensors with sub-metric spatial detail or drones that can be deployed in very short time lapses. Besides such opportunities, these new and wealthy infor…

Geographical distribution of crime in Italian provinces: a spatial econometric analysis

2009

For a long time social sciences scholars from different fields have devoted their attention to identifying the causes leading to commit criminal offences and recently lots of studies have included the analysis of spatial effects. Respect to the Italian crime phenomenon some stylized facts exist: high spatial and time variability and presence of “organised crime” (e.g. Mafia and Camorra) deep-seated in some local territorial areas. Using explanatory spatial data analysis, the paper firstly explores the spatial structure and distribution of four different typologies of crimes (murders, thefts, frauds, and squeezes) in Italian provinces in two years, 1999 and 2003. ESDA allows us to detect som…

On the property of diffusion in the spatial error model.

2005

International audience; The aim of this paper is to illustrate the property of global spillover effects in the first-order spatial autoregressive error model and the associated diffusion process of spatial shocks. An application is provided on a sample of 145 regions over 1989–1999 and highlights the most influential regions.

Space-time analysis of GDP disparities among European regions : a Markov chains approach

2004

The purpose of this paper is to study the evolution of the disparities between 138 European regions over the 1980-1995 period. We characterize the regional per capita GDP cross-sectional distribution by means of nonparametric estimations of density functions and we model the growth process as a first-order stationary Markov chain. Spatial effects are then introduced within the Markov chain framework using regional conditioning (Quah, 1996b) and spatial Markov chains (Rey, 2001). The results of the analysis indicate the persistence of regional disparities, a progressive bias toward a poverty trap and the importance of geography to explain the convergence process.

An Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis of European Regional Disparities, 1980–1995

2003

European integration has stimulated numerous studies of regional economic convergence within the European Union in recent macroeconomic and regional science literature (e.g. Abraham and Von Rompuy 1995; Armstrong 1995a; Neven and Gouyette 1995; Martin 2001). Most of the time, the empirical methods that have been used are identical to the methods employed in international studies. However, spatial effects, particularly spatial autocorrelation and spatial heterogeneity, must be taken into account when analyzing the convergence process at regional scale. There are number of factors — trade between regions, technology, knowledge diffusion and more generally regional spillovers — that lead to ge…
