The increase or decrease of the number of settlements is frequently used to assess the interactions between ancient societies and their environment. Beside this quantitative indicator, the pattern and the spatial extent of a settlement are crucial to estimate the " human pressure " on the environment. Within the ArchaeDyn program, several quantitative indicators have been developed to characterise the spatial and hierarchical structure of a settlements' scatter. The application of these indicators in four regions of Southern and Central Gaul shows the evolution of the spatial and hierarchical configurations of the settlement through phases of increasing and reducing rates of occupation.
Sex ratio and spatial distribution of male and female Antennaria dioica (Asteraceae) plants

Sex ratio, sex spatial distribution and sexual dimorphism in reproduction and arbuscular mycorrhizal colonisation were investigated in the dioecious clonal plant Antennaria dioica (Asteraceae). Plants were monitored for five consecutive years in six study plots in Oulanka, northern Finland. Sex ratio, spatial distribution of sexes, flowering frequency, number of floral shoots and the number and weight of inflorescences were recorded. In addition, intensity of mycorrhizal fungi in the roots was assessed. Both sexes flowered each year with a similar frequency, but the overall genet sex ratio was strongly female-biased. The purpose of this study is to analyse the spatial pattern and the post-entry performance of tourism businesses in the Italian insular regions of Sardinia and Sicily. Using geo-referenced micro-data for the period 2011-2014, we explore the spatial distribution of ac-commodation firms in the two insular regions, and then compare the coastal and inland areas of the two regions. We observe a higher dispersion of firms in Sardinia than in Sicily; the latter, however having a higher concentration of firms in coastal and urban areas. The sediment delivery processes occurring in a small Sicilian basin are modelled using the spatially distributed SEDD model recently proposed by Ferro and Minacapilli.
