Visual Comparison of an Artificial Pupil Contact Lens to Monovision

PURPOSE To assess and compare the effects of contact-lens based artificial pupil design and monovision correction on visual performance. METHODS In a cross-over study design, 22 presbyopic patients (age range 50 to 64 years) were evaluated using artificial pupil contact lens on the non-dominant eye and monovision. Contrast sensitivity (CS) in children is not routinely measured in the clinical setting, although CS losses have been found in amblyopic and premature children. Thus simple visual acuity measurements do not completely assess their quality of vision. To evaluate contrast sensitivity in children, a reliable and easy test, sampling the entire spatial frequency range, is necessary. Detection performance of normal cats and those lacking areas 17 and 18: a behavioral approach to analyse pattern recognition deficits.

The ability of cats to discriminate between two geometrical outline patterns in the presence of superimposed Gaussian visual noise was tested before and after bilateral removal of cortical area 17 and parts of area 18. The detection probability PD was measured as a function of the signal-to-noise ratio for the parameters: noise bandwidth, spatial frequency content and rate of movement of patterns. In both normal and lesioned cats a broadband noise was found to be most effective in masking the large patterns while two other types of noise, a medium frequency noise and a high frequency noise had little or no masking effect. The results of the experimental study of holographic recording in a-As2S3 films are reported such as exposure and intensity dependencies, spatial frequency dependence. Several peculiarities are found including recording intensity threshold, nonmonotonical intensity dependencies, nonlinear exposure curves, the change of the spatial frequency response due to films aging. Holographic Recording of Surface Relief Gratings on As40S60-xSex Thin Films

The studies of direct holographic recording of the surface relief gratings on amorphous As40S60−xSex thin films are presented. These gratings were created upon exposure to polarized laser beams of various wavelengths (λ = 473 – 650 nm). The orthogonally ±45° linearly polarized light beams were used for recording. The surface structure of the relief gratings was investigated by atomic force microscopy. The influence of laser beam wavelength and spatial frequency of the gratings recorded (grating period ?) on the surface relief gratings formation for every composition was examined.

Quantitative phase imaging by single-shot Hilbert-Huang phase microscopy.

We propose a novel single-shot Hilbert-Huang transform-based algorithm applied to digital holographic microscopy (DHM) for robust, fast, and accurate single-shot quantitative phase imaging in on-axis and off-axis configurations. Fringe pattern with possible defects and closed fringes are adaptively filtered and accurately phase demodulated using local fringe direction estimation. Experimental validation of the proposed techniques is presented as the DHM study of microbeads and red blood cells phase samples. Obtained results compare very favorably with the Fourier approach (off-axis) and temporal phase shifting (on-axis).

<title>Eye model with controllable lens scattering</title>

A model of human eye for experiments in vision research has been developed using PLZT ceramics. This ``artificial eye{''} allows to simulate light scattering caused by cataract in the eye lens. Light scattering of a composite eye lens of the model depends on the electric field applied to a transparent electrooptic PLZT ceramics plate that is attached directly to the lens. The image degradation in such a model eye at various degrees of scattering is studied observing and recording the contrast of images on the ``retinal plane{''} created by standard test objects with different spatial frequency or by a He-Ne laser source passing a diffractive transparent placed before the eye.
