Changes in Transport and Non Transport Costs: Local vs. Global Impacts in a Spatial Network

We develop a multi-country Dixit-Stiglitz trade model and analyze how industry location and welfare respond to changes in: (i) transport frictions (e.g., infrastructure, transportation technology); and (ii) non-transport frictions (e.g., tariffs, standards and regulations). We show that changes in non-transport frictions, which are usually origin-destination specific, do not allow for any clear prediction as to changes in industry location and welfare; whereas changes in transport frictions, which are usually not origin-destination specific, may allow for such predictions. Optical transfer function engineering for a tunable 3D structured illumination microscope

Two important features of three-dimensional structured illumination microscopy (3D-SIM) are its optical sectioning (OS) and super-resolution (SR) capabilities. Previous works on 3D-SIM systems show that these features are coupled. We demonstrate that a 3D-SIM system using a Fresnel biprism illuminated by multiple linear incoherent sources provides a structured illumination pattern whose lateral and axial modulation frequencies can be tuned separately. Upgrading a brightfield optical microscope into a robust numerically advanced interference-based phase imager

The approach to convert a brightfield microscope into an interference-based versatile quantitative phase imaging unit is presented. It employs partially coherent illumination and diffraction grating. Enhanced interferogram bio-phase retrieval is performed by two-shot numerically-robust Hilbert-Huang method.
Microscope system with on axis programmable Fourier transform filtering

Abstract We propose an on-axis microscope optical system to implement programmable optical Fourier transform image processing operations, taking advantage of phase and polarization modulation of a liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) display. We use a Hamamatsu spatial light modulator (SLM), free of flickering, which therefore can be tuned to fully eliminate the zero order component of the encoded diffractive filter. One-dimensional wavelength multiplexed microscope without objective lens

A new approach aimed to achieve microscopic imaging without objective lenses and based on wavelength multiplexing of the spatial object information is presented. The proposed method is used to develop, construct and experimentally validate a new type of optical microscope having no objective lens and no numerical reconstruction algorithms to allow imaging process. In order to extract the collected spatial information we use a spectrometer as part of our microscope system. Preliminary results are presented while considering two different types of one-dimensional (1-D) objects.

The Middle Pleistocene Schöningen 13II-4 'Spear Horizon' (Germany) is a key site for the study of human evolution, most notably for the discovery of Paleolithic wooden weaponry and evidence for developed hunting strategies. On the other hand, the 'Spear Horizon' offers an excellent opportunity to approach hominin spatial behavior, thanks to the richness of the archeological assemblage, its exceptional preservation, and the vast expanse of the excavated surface. A Nondifferentiable Optimization Approach to Ratio-Cut Partitioning

We propose a new method for finding the minimum ratio-cut of a graph. Ratio-cut is NP-hard problem for which the best previously known algorithm gives an O(log n)-factor approximation by solving its dually related maximum concurrent flow problem.We formulate the minimum ratio-cut as a certain nondifferentiable optimization problem, and show that the global minimum of the optimization problem is equal to the minimum ratio-cut. Moreover, we provide strong symbolic computation based evidence that any strict local minimum gives an approximation by a factor of 2. The "condition-specific competition hypothesis" proposes that coexistence of 2 species is possible when spatial or temporal variations in environmental conditions exist and each species responds differently to those conditions. The distribution of different species of feather mites on their hosts is known to be affected by intrinsic host factors such as structure of feathers and friction among feathers during flight, but there is also evidence that external factors such as humidity and temperature can affect mite distribution. Computer simulations are a common procedure for assessing the performance of new algorithms. To conduct a valid and accurate study, the models employed in such simulators need to be carefully selected. Regarding shadowing modeling, one-dimensional models are fairly commonplace in the literature. While simple and with low computational costs, these models can not produce correlated fading values for mobiles that are in nearby positions and, besides, do not include the cross-correlation effect.
