Analysis of multiple internal reflections in a parallel aligned liquid crystal on silicon SLM

Multiple internal reflection effects on the optical modulation of a commercial reflective parallel-aligned liquid-crystal on silicon (PAL-LCoS) spatial light modulator (SLM) are analyzed. The display is illuminated with different wavelengths and different angles of incidence. Non-negligible Fabry-Perot (FP) effect is observed due to the sandwiched LC layer structure. A simplified physical model that quantitatively accounts for the observed phenomena is proposed. The Talbot effect - or self-imaging phenomenon - is applied to the measurement of focal lengths. The technique only requires axial distances to be measured and is suitable for both converging and diverging thick lenses.
Effects of spatial dispersion and damping on exciton absorption

Exciton absorption is studied in the spatially dispersive case. The energy-propagation properties of the medium are used to define the absorption coefficient. The interplay of dispersion and damping in determining the absorption coefficient is discussed and a critical value of the damping above which the dispersion effects disappear is derived analytically. Furthermore, the dependence of the spectral and of the integrated absorption coefficient on the auxiliary boundary condition is discussed.
Different strategies in optical recognition of polychromatic images.

We treat two different problems in the recognition of polychromatic images: (1) recognition of an object with a given shape and color combination; (2) recognition of an object regardless of its color combination. To solve each problem we propose different strategies. The number of filters and the objects to which the filters are matched vary with the strategy. Phase-only filters have been used to achieve recognition of both problems. Computer results are given for different targets and scenes to show the behavior of the proposed strategies.
Spatial information transmission using axial temporal coherence coding

We present an approach that can be used for transmission of information through space-limited systems or for superresolution. The spatial information is coded with different axial temporal coherence by interfering every spatial region in the input with the same region, but with a certain known delay in the longitudinal axis. Every spatial region has different delay. After mixing all of the spatial information, it is transmitted through the space-limited system. Taking an approach to learning in the workplace as a phenomenon situated and accumulated in the course of work activities and everyday practice, the purpose of this study was to investigate how workers (development engineers and designers) themselves perceive the role of experience in work and learning. The examination of glacial sediments in thin sections has become a common procedure in recent years. Apparent sand grain orientation (microfabric) in thin sections is one of the key elements marking certain microstructures. In an attempt to make till micromorphology studies less subjective and investigate the orientation of sand-sized particles in tills, we have developed an image analysis procedure to measure and analyse the spatial distribution of the till microfabric.
