Northern refugia and recent expansion in the North Sea: The case of the wrasse Symphodus melops (Linnaeus, 1758)

2011

Pleistocene climate changes have imposed extreme conditions to intertidal rocky marine communities, forcing many species to significant range shifts in their geographical distributions. Phylogeographic analyses based on both mitochondrial and nuclear genetic markers provide a useful approach to unravel phylogeographic patterns and processes of species after this time period, to gain general knowledge of how climatic changes affect shifts in species distributions. We analyzed these patterns on the corkwing wrasse (Symphodus melops, Labridae), a rocky shore species inhabiting North Sea waters and temperate northeastern Atlantic Ocean from Norway toMorocco including theAzores, using a fragment …

Growth and Spatial Dependence in Europe

2009

The convergence of European regions has been largely discussed in the empirical literature during the last decade. Two observations are often emphasized. First, the convergence rate among European regions appears to be very slow (Barro and Sala-i-Martins 1991, 1995; Armstrong 1995, Sala-i-Martin 1996a,b). Second, the tools used in the regional science literature show that the geographical distribution of European per capita GDP is highly clustered and characterized by global and local autocorrelation (Armstrong 1995; Ertur et al. 2007; Lopez-Bazo et al. 1999; Le Gallo and Ertur 2003 with a UE15 regional database and Ertur and Koch 2006, with a UE27 enlarged regional database). Beam test measurements of Low Gain Avalanche Detector single pads and arrays for the ATLAS High Granularity Timing Detector

2018

For the high luminosity upgrade of the LHC at CERN, ATLAS is considering the addition of a High Granularity Timing Detector (HGTD) in front of the end cap and forward calorimeters at |z|= 3.5 m and covering the region 2.4 <|η|< 4 to help reducing the effect of pile-up. The chosen sensors are arrays of 50 μm thin Low Gain Avalanche Detectors (LGAD). This paper presents results on single LGAD sensors with a surface area of 1.3×1.3 mm2 and arrays with 2×2 pads with a surface area of 2×2 mm2 or 3×3 mm2 each and different implant doses of the p+ multiplication layer. They are obtained from data collected during a beam test campaign in autumn 2016 with a pion beam of 120 GeV energy at the CERN SP…

Reconstruction of an Accretion Disk Image in AU Mon from CoRoT Photometry

2011

AbstractThe long-period binary system AU Mon was photometrically observed on-board the CoRoT satellite in a continuous run of almost 60 days long which has covered almost 5 complete cycles. Unprecedented sub milimag precision of CoRoT photometry reveals all complexity of its light variations in this, still active mass-transfer binary system. We present images of an accretion disk reconstructed by eclipse mapping, and an optimization of intensity distribution along disk surface. Time resolution and accurate CoRoT photometric measurements allow precise location of spatial distribution of ‘hot’ spots on the disk, and tracing temporal changes in their activity. Clumpy disk structure is similar …

Deceleration in the Expansion of SN 1993J

1997

A rarity among supernova, SN 1993J in M81 can be studied with high spatial resolution. Its radio power and distance permit VLBI observations to monitor the expansion of its angular structure. This radio structure was previously revealed to be shell-like and to be undergoing a self-similar expansion at a constant rate. From VLBI observations at the wavelengths of 3.6 and 6 cm in the period 6 to 42 months after explosion, we have discovered that the expansion is decelerating. Our measurement of this deceleration yields estimates of the density profiles of the supernova ejecta and circumstellar material in standard supernova explosion models.

Spatial coherence properties of a multiple aperture system an analysis based on the Walsh functions

1997

Analysis of the spatial coherence of the light transmitted by an optical device composed of a periodical array of identical apertures is developed by employing an approach based on the properties of the binary Walsh functions. The successive interactions between each aperture, and the mutual intensity characterizing the coherence state of the transmitted light, can be adequately explained through the behaviour of the Walsh-Hadamard spectrum associated with the intensity distribution resulting from the far-field propagated light at the output of the aperture array.

Correlation between the spatial distribution of circumstellar disks and massive stars in the young open cluster NGC 6611

2009

Context: the observations of the proplyds in the Orion Nebula Cluster, showing clear evidence of ongoing photoevaporation, have provided a clear proof about the role of the externally induced photoevaporation in the evolution of circumstellar disks. NGC 6611 is an open cluster suitable to study disk photoevaporation, thanks to its large population of massive members and of stars with disk. In a previous work, we obtained evidence of the influence of the strong UV field generated by the massive cluster members on the evolution of disks around low-mass Pre-Main Sequence members. That work was based on a multi-band BVIJHK and X-ray catalog purposely compiled to select the cluster members with …

Physical and Chemical Inhomogeneities Inside the Vela SNR Shell: Indications of Ejecta Shrapnels

2007

We present the results of the combined analysis of three XMM-Newton EPIC observations of the northern rim of the Vela SNR. The three pointings cover an area of ~10 pc^2 (at 250 pc) behind the main shock front and we aim at studying with high resolution the spatial distribution of the physical and chemical properties of the X-ray emitting plasma on this large scale. We produce count-rate images and equivalent width maps of the Ne IX and Mg XI emission blends. We also perform a spatially resolved spectral analysis of a set of physically homogeneous regions. We reveal physical and chemical inhomogeneities in the X-ray emitting plasma. In particular, we find large variations of the O, Ne, Mg, a…

Modeling solar and stellar flares

2003

Abstract The thermal phase of solar X-ray flares has been described as heating-triggered evolution of plasma confined in coronal loops. This paper describes how the modeling of the thermal phase of spatially resolved solar X-ray flares has been extended to investigate spatially unresolved stellar X-ray flares with different scopes, aims and perspectives. Hydrodynamic models are able to describe the evolution of global flare features, such as the X-ray light curves, and to put constraints on heating location. Based on the solar analogy, either detailed hydrodynamic models or approximate analytical descriptions of the decay of flaring coronal loops or loop systems have been extensively applie…

Experimental demonstration of bistable phase locking in a photorefractive oscillator

2012

We report experimental evidence of bistable phase locking in nonlinear optics, in particular, in a photorefractive oscillator emitting in few transverse modes. Bistable phase locking is a recently proposed method for converting a laserlike system, which is phase invariant, into a phase-bistable one by injecting a suitable spatially modulated monochromatic beam, resonant with the laser emission, into the optical cavity. We experimentally demonstrate that the emission on the fundamental TEM00 mode becomes phase bistable by injection of a beam with the shape of the TEM10 mode with appropriate frequency, in accordance with recent theoretical predictions [K. Staliunas et al., Phys. Rev. A 80, 02…
