Le paysage, entre esthétique & écologie : modélisation rétrospective à partir de changements d'occupation du sol

2016

Landscape is both a backdrop to the lives of human populations and a medium for the life cycle of animal species. Landscape changes induced by land-use and land-cover dynamics affect both these dimensions, the one aesthetic, and the other ecological. Because these rationales areusually studied within different disciplines, little research has been done into how the two clashor combine as and when landscape structures change. This work seeks therefore to model the spatial co-evolution of the aesthetic and ecological functions of landscape retrospectively usingspatial metrics based on land-cover data. It focuses on changes in the urban fringes of two French cities (Paris and Besançon) over th…

EDGE: explorer of diffuse emission and gamma-ray burst explosions

2009

How structures on various scales formed and evolved from the early Universe up to present time is a fundamental question of astrophysical cosmology. EDGE will trace the cosmic history of the baryons from the early generations of massive star by Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) explosions, through the period of cluster formation, down to very low redshifts, when between a third and one half of the baryons are expected to reside in cosmic filaments undergoing gravitational collapse by dark matter (Warm Hot Intragalactic Medium: WHIM). In addition EDGE, with its unprecedented observational capabilities, will provide key results on several other topics. The science is feasible with a medium class mission …

Visual performance with multifocal intraocular lenses

2004

Abstract Objective To evaluate distance and near visual performance under bright (photopic) and dim (mesopic) conditions in patients who had undergone uncomplicated cataract extraction with multifocal or monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Design Prospective, nonrandomized, masked, comparative, observational case series. Participants Thirty-two eyes of 32 patients after zonal-progressive multifocal IOL implantation (Allergan Medical Optics Array SA-40N) and 32 eyes of 32 age-matched patients after monofocal IOL implantation (Allergan Medical Optics SI-40NB). Intervention All eyes underwent phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. Main outcome measures At 18 months after surgery,…

Processing natural scenes requires the visual system to integrate local features into global object descriptions. To achieve coherent representations, the human brain uses statistical dependencies to guide weighting of local feature conjunctions. Pairwise interactions among feature detectors in early visual areas may form the early substrate of these local feature bindings. To investigate local interaction structures in visual cortex, we combined psychophysical experiments with computational modeling and natural scene analysis. We first measured contrast thresholds for 2x2 grating patch arrangements (plaids), which differed in spatial frequency composition (low, high or mixed), number of gr…

FUNCIONES NEUROPSICOLÓGICAS EN LAS HABILIDADES DE INICIO A LA LECTOESCRITURA

2016

Abstract:Numerous studies have tried to identify the set of skills and knowledge that are the basis for the development of literacy as phonological awareness, orthographic awareness and RAN. Since learning of literacy has its onset between 3 and 6 years, which is the maximum period of brain plasticity, it is clear the need to relate certain brain functions with the early onset of the skills that are the basis of its learning. Thus, the main objective of this work is the detection of neuropsychological functions that allow proper development of all those skills. Participants were 119 students who have been assessed twice, when 4 and 5 years old. The instruments used were the BIL, the Rapid A…

The Development of Visuo-spatial Memory: How to Remember Location

1992

Recent studies on developmental differences in spatial memory have reported equivocal results. Some found an age-dependent improvement of memory performance whereas others did not. The two studies reported here investigate age differences in memory for visual-spatial information. A picture reconstruction task with simultaneous presentation of scene-like visual-spatial arrangements was used. Subjects had to recognise objects and to reconstruct the initial spatial arrangement. The first study with 5to 10year-olds produced the typical age-dependent improvement in recognising visual material as well as in remembering the locations of specific objects. No effect for age was obtained in memory f…

Improving graphical information system model use with elision and connecting lines

2004

Graphical information system (IS) models are used to specify and design IS from several perspectives. Due to the growing size and complexity of modern information systems, critical design information is often distributed via multiple diagrams. This slows search performance and results in reading errors that later cause omissions and inconsistencies in the final designs. We study the impact of large screens and the two promising visual integration techniques of elision and connecting lines that can decrease the designers' cognitive efforts to read diagrams. We conduct a laboratory experiment using 84 computer science students to investigate the impact of these techniques on the accuracy of t…

Beyond GDP: an analysis of the socio-economic diversity of European regions

2019

International audience; This paper aims to analyze the socioeconomic diversity of the European Union (EU-28) regions from a dynamic perspective. For that purpose, we combine a series of exploratory space-time analysis approaches to multiple Factor Analysis (MFA) applied to a large range of indicators collected at the NUTS-2 level for the period 2000–2015 for the EU-28. First, we find that the first factor of MFA, interpreted as economic development (ECO-DEV), is spatially clustered and that a moderate convergence process is at work between European regions from 2000 to 2015. Second, when comparing these results with those obtained for Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, we show that th…

GeoNET: WebGIS of a GNSS Permanent Network

2009

In Sicily, from 2005 to 2007, a research group at the Dipartimento di Rappresentazione, DIRAP (University of Palermo) has realized a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) network for real time positioning (Network Real Time Kinematic –NRTK), activity founded by “Minister of Instruction, University and Scientific Research” (MIUR) as “National Interest Research Program” PRIN2005 entitled "Networks of permanent GPS stations for the survey in real time control and use of emergency". The data-base contains different kind of information both general on the network and positional. Positional information can be useful for two types of survey applications: static survey with post-processing of d…

Spatial aggregation and resampling expansion of big surveys: An analysis of wage inequality

2020

Income inequality is becoming a growing concern, worldwide, with wage inequality being the root cause of its recent escalation. With the aim of adding to the knowledge on this subject, this paper focuses on the spatial dimension of the problem, an aspect which has received less attention in the literature. We identify the determinants of inequality in wage distribution in Spain at a provincial level using the microdata of the Structure of Earnings Survey (N = 216,769) and estimate their impact from a spatial perspective. Spatial computation of wage concentrations, however, reduces the sample size to just 52 observations, leading to model challenges. To overcome this problem, we adopt a supe…
