Growth and convergence in Africa: The impact of spatial effects

The aim of this paper is to study the impact of spatial effects on convergence process in Africa over the period 1975-2000. Taking into account these effects through the methodology of Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) and spatial econometrics, we focus on the geographical dimension of economic convergence of African countries. This allows us to deal with spatial autocorrelation which is a consequence of econometric interdependences due to geographic spillovers. An extensive economics and regional science literature has discussed the importance of social capital for economic growth and development. Yet, what social capital is and how it is formed are elusive issues, which require further investigation. Here, we refer to social capital in terms of “civic” capital and “good culture,” as rephrased by Guiso, Sapienza, and Zingales and Tabellini. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a known risk factor for cognitive decline. Using polygenic rat models selectively bred for high and low intrinsic exercise capacity and simultaneously modelling as low and high innate risk factor for MetS respectively, we have previously shown that adult animals with lower exercise capacity/higher MetS risk perform poorly in tasks requiring flexible cognition. However, it is not known whether these deficits in cognition are present already at young age. AbstractTurunen discusses how the “European significance” of the European Heritage Label (EHL) sites has been narrated through interconnections of European values and European integration. She argues that, in the context of the EHL, integration is intricately linked to the notion of spreading common values, which in turn is entangled with Eurocentrism. Zastosowanie metodyki audytu krajobrazowego do identyfikacji krajobrazów w skali lokalnej na przykładzie gminy Szczyrk

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki identyfikacji i oceny krajobrazów gminy Szczyrk. W badaniach zastosowano metodę audytu krajobrazowego i trzy kryteria delimitacji: ukształtowanie terenu, kompozycję przestrzenną oraz pokrycie terenu. Badania prowadzono na obszarze górskim, gdzie dotychczas metoda nie była testowana. Stwierdzono występowanie 58 jednostek krajobrazowych należących do 13 typów. Powierzchniowo dominują krajobrazy leśne. Układ jednostek nawiązuje do pięter klimatyczno-roślinnych. Wraz ze zwiększaniem skali badań maleją powierzchnie jednostek, nie maleje znacząco ich liczba. The impact of retro-cue validity on working memory representation: Evidence from electroencephalograms.

Visual working memory (VWM) performance can be improved by retrospectively cueing an item. The validity of retro-cues has an impact on the mechanisms underlying the retro-cue effect, but how non-cued representations are handled under different retro-cue validity conditions is not yet clear. Here, we used electroencephalograms to investigate whether retro-cue validity can affect the fate of non-cued representations in VWM. The participants were required to perform a change-detection task using a retro-cue with 80% or 20% validity.
